Introduction
Sleep is an integral part of every child's mental and physical growth. However, over the years, rest has become a 'luxury' many modern children cannot afford. Teenagers today appear stressed and excited because they only get a fraction of the total rest-time an average child should get. The article focuses on some of the sleeping issues that are exhausting our children with the aim of educating teenagers and their parents. The article's primary purpose is informing the younger generation on the importance of sleep by also pointing out the negative aspect of failing to get enough rest.
The article begins by pointing out what the average high school student goes through to excel in their academics. This is in reference to the book "Overloaded and Underprepared" which the author uses to make an emotional appeal to his audience. He specifically focuses on sleep which he goes on to explain its importance, especially for the young generation. His article is formatted in such a way that he begins by pointing out the importance of sleep; "Before adulthood, a baseline amount is fundamental and non-negotiable, or should be," (Bruni). He goes on to provide examples of what various institutions are doing to promote sleep in schools.
One of the key strengths of the article is the use of research. The author has quoted many credible sources in his work. He also points out that depriving a student of sleep is crazy and can have severe effects on the children. I observed that he also provides data showing the magnitude of the problem. The following article has accomplished its purpose by pointing out all relevant facts surrounding this issue which appeals to the logo's type of audience.
How to Survive the College Admissions Madness
One of the most anxious moments in every high-school graduate's life is waiting for admission into college. Unfortunately, not all of them manage to join campus because they are rejected during the admission process. The author takes an informative tone providing real-life examples about people who were rejected by the colleges they applied for but would later go on to achieve their dreams. One common thing about all the subjects used is their resilience and determination to move forward even after being rejected.
The target audience, in this case, are high-school graduates who often get caught in the college admission madness, and when they get rejected, many of them end up losing hope. Pathos and logos forms of appeal are used throughout the article as the main persuasion method. The article's primary focus is on students who are pressured to apply for charming colleges such as the Ivy League of Colleges forgetting that there are many other decent colleges that would help them achieve their dreams. "People bloom at various stages of life, and different individuals flourish in different climates," (Bruni).
The article's use of real-life examples is a strength that helps appeal to the audiences at a personal level since many people can relate to some of this stories. I agree with the author when he states that, "For one thing, the admissions game is too flawed to be given so much credit," (Bruni). The role parents play in helping their children go through this "madness" is vital, and its importance has been clearly stated in the article.
Will You Sprint, Stroll or Stumble Into a Career
More and more graduates are being released into the world, and many of these graduates have high hopes about their future and the future of their respective careers. However, the reality is that many of them end up jobless for some time as compared to back when a college degree was not crucial for one to secure a job. This article takes a look at the different paths modern graduates take towards finding their career and compares it with previous eras. The article aims at informing its audience which is mainly comprised of young people who graduate from college or high school with high hopes of securing a job in the future.
The author has achieved his purpose by effectively explaining the different eras different generations have gone through while comparing them to the modern 21st-century era. He begins by identifying and appealing to his target audience. "They go off to college, resist pressures to choose a job-connected major, then drift after graduation, often short of money and any real plan," (Selingo). The article focuses on providing significant amounts of data that reveal the differences between the three last centuries regarding education and the workforce.
The author demonstrates a fair evaluation of the crisis facing many of these graduates by separating them into three categories: sprinters, Wanderers, and Stragglers (Selingo). These three sections provide information on the three type of graduates that exist in the current century. He points out their differences as well as the path each takes before achieving success in finding a suitable career.
