The cash spent to lobby the U.S Congress has increased substantially from 1.57 billion dollars in 2000 to 3.37 billion dollars in 2017 (McKay 34). Under the governance of President Barrack Obama, the government was divided as the Republican Congress were roadblocking presidential appointments like in the courts. Ideally, America, as a presidential republic, would function well when the political parties within the nation are broad in their ideologies (Gierzynski 21). However, this is not true since the Democrats and Republicans tend to act in a parliamentary fashion and show some sense of political cohesion within different ranks. The Democratic Party incorporate shared policy goals such as protection and expansion of the safety net.

On the other hand, the Republicans tend to be cohered around the aspect of negative partisanship. The Congress leadership focusses on the capacity of policy and lawmakers to raise funds but does not consider legislative issues. The political parties that support such forms of leadership care more about those in the legislative branch rather than governance. There has been an ideological shift in politics in the United States in which the majority party brings up majority bills with majority support. The number of right-wing absolutists has increased hence threatening congresspersons who do not toe the ideological line. Ideally, the current U.S political system leaves many politicians ill-equipped to deal with the issues that affect the country's economic growth negatively (McKay 43). In a democratic system, people should be allowed to vote freely, as well as provide the voters with quality information to enable them to elect the most suitable candidates for different positions. Since America does not have the moral strength to elect leaders who are capable of repairing the divisions within the country, dysfunction in government continues to threaten a range of processes in the nation.

In the U.S even when different parties control the House and Senate, the president still has some power. Republican extremism brings forth a negative influence on American democracy. Lack of public engagement would depict an undemocratic feature in the U.S political system.

The U.S has a broken political system that causes some headwinds to economic growth. The system leads to unsustainable debt, as well as the dwindling nature of the available natural resources.
