Explain the importance of continually improving knowledge and practice
It is essential for me to understand the current legislation, guidance and good practice in my workplace which should be evidence-based. This will help me to gain self-confidence and understanding to deliver excellent services to my patients .
Improving my knowledge is beneficial not only for me but useful for management, colleagues and the patients who I am caring for. I also need to know about new skills and knowledge for my personal development. I can access this knowledge through learning and appropriate study days as well as from my colleagues. This enables me to give proper care to my service users and build a positive relationship between myself and individuals more so to follow the norms and code of practice of the trust. I need to update my knowledge and skills, and if necessary change the way of caring for the benefit of patients and family. There are some changes on early warning score and skin bundle. This will help to understand and benefit for the staff and the patients. Knowing my professional limitations is very important and knowing when I need to obtain the assistance of qualified personnel to deliver safe care, this will enhance the quality of my work and will help to get a positive outcome from the workplace. Understanding the principles of professional development is vital for my career and has and will continue to contribute to improving my knowledge.
Analyse potential barriers to professional development
Some Potential barriers will affect professional development that will be:
- Inadequate staffing may change the mode of work within the unit especially patients care. Sometimes work and study cannot go together resulting in limited space on the course which acts as an additional barrier.
- Lack of support from the management can affect the whole staff, for example, recruits will not get proper training and support due to lack of enough funds to offer adequate courses. Management must make sure that the team is getting sufficient training and supervisions. Some personal barriers will also prevent professional development. These could be low self -esteem, personal issues, transport issues, childcare issues, etc.
- Lack of support from assessor will impact negatively on the staff who is working with them. For example, if a mentor cannot get a shift to work with a student will affect their training and the task, so the student cannot complete their task in time.
Communication plays a vital role in professional development. However, lack or inappropriate communication between colleagues may affect professional development. The key point of communication is accessibility. It is crucial that a clear, precise communication is achieved. This could be verbal or written most importantly when giving informed choices to my patients. Where an unclear communication is provided, could sound like negative feedback between myself and a patient instead of positive.
Finally, lack of inadequate training and limited space on the course and cancellation could potentially lead to costs and cause of life. For instance, if a staff member has not received adequate training to use specific equipment, this could jeopardize the reputation of the management.
Compare the use of different sources and systems of support for professional development
Each person has got different knowledge, and they get formal or informal support depends on their motivation and willingness to learn. Formal supports such as appraisals, PDR and supervisions. This allows the manager to assess the staff's performances which in turn builds a plan for them to step ahead and to recognize their training needs to enable them to grow and progress. So, staff will feel free and they can talk with an open mind and will get support from the management to develop their confidence.
Mentoring is a vast support implement. It is utilized when employing a new staff allowing them to improve their knowledge and capacity and guide them through all policies and procedures. The mentor can work with new staff throughout their working time gives different ideas and getting comfortable and with confidence when they work alone.
Internal training and courses within the organization will enhance their work experience and knowledge. Ward meeting or sharing communication book with ward staff can assist in achieving the highest standards in the care setting. This can share their knowledge of what has worked or not worked well throughout the shift to share to the next member of staff working. Staff's negative attitudes towards each other will affect their confidence and impression to work in place.
Beyond the organization can include CQC, social services, other health professionals giving advance support to increase their knowledge. Some agencies (online) are offering free training (Diploma in health and social care) or more specific training courses such as catheterization, nasogastric tube training, etc. which compared to internal training may be more useful to the employees.
Prioritize development goals and targets to meet expected standards
All staff must attend a mandatory training programme annually to update their knowledge and skills which include: first aid, manual handling, food hygiene, safeguarding adult and children, health and safety, etc. There are lots of on-going training programmes for employees to improve their knowledge. Staffs are supervised and trained during their course.
All factors need to be considered and then compared to the training budget the organization has and the consequences against them. For example, if we have more patients requiring lifting or hoisting and the staffs are poorly trained it could lead to them being left in a very vulnerable position.
We have separate dementia training will cover all management and how to deal with those patients especially nutrition wise. Staffs should know how to manage patients who have got dehydration or undernutrition. I encourage those patients to eat and drink more, so I need to maintain food and fluid chart. Those with supplements can be given more attention during eating and drinking weekly enabling them to update mass and daily weight.
The matron or manager also need to stay up to date on new policies which can help them prioritize what training is required and when. Time allocation and duties should also be considered in case the staff team is large teamwhich can make it hard to organize training sessions.
Evaluate own knowledge and performance against standards and benchmarks
I have worked in the care home for the elderly for five years before I have joined in the hospital as a health care assistant. To begin with, I was given the opportunity to advance my knowledge by attending training courses provided within the hospital. I realized that I could learn more as part of my job role. Learning the code of practice confirms that I promote and maintain the privacy, dignity, and rights of the patients I care for and that I try to improve the quality of health care and support through continuing professional development. I achieve this within my job role. The codes of practice state that I am responsible for the quality of my work and take responsibility for maintaining and improving my knowledge and skills. I also need to report any actions by colleagues or patients that I feel harm for others or if it affects their health and safety. There is a whistleblowing rule can be used to protect others. I will ensure that I am behaving correctly and making an appropriate professional relationship with other colleagues, patients, and families. I will never accept gifts or money from the patients or families directly.
By obtaining my Level- 5 qualification I am gaining more knowledge and getting a chance to learn more to improve my knowledge and skills. During my training, I must train basics about the care and duty to freshers also I can coordinate the bay, giving a hand over to other staff and updating information on the whiteboard.
I always try to respect another member of staff or patients and try not to share their rights with others. There are some rules and regulations are necessary to follow within the hospital environment to protect vulnerable adult and children from abuse and neglect. Promoting quality care ensures that you are implementing standard care to the patients with best practice within their interest. Health and safety are more critical during work to avoid harmful situations. Reporting damaged equipment is also essential in the workplace. All staffs should ensure that those information's are up to date and they are capable of working safely with the patients. The minimum standard maintained by CQC is the importance of ensuring that all care has been provided under regulations and all staff is up to date on required knowledge.
Regulations are necessary to protect vulnerable people from abuse and promote quality care in the hospital. To follow this standard, I need to ensure that I am applying the best practice likely. I have to maintain health and safety regulations
Produce a plan for own professional development, using an appropriate source of support
We have ongoing in-hospital training about all topics of knowledge I need to work in the care setting. These can be improving my professional and practical skills. Attending mandatory training includes all training which gives more insight. Hospitals are set for e-learning courses for all staff to save their time and budget which helped more. Evaluating my strength and weakness through PDR review also gives good support to motivate my skills through which I can improve my weakness.
I can start my personal development by learning new skills, keep up to dating my knowledge by booking additional courses will set my goals and plan out.
Establish a process to evaluate the effectiveness of the plan
A plan needs to discuss with all staff which helps to get different ideas from everyone. Asking questions to each other about the ideas and goals will improve the quality of the plan and according to that way we can process. This will depend on information collected during the process. Making questionnaires with colleagues will create strength and help to overcome weakness...
