Importance of the Research
Leadership behavior is important particularly in learning institutions where students consider some of their leaders to be their role models. By practicing the proper leadership behaviors, leaders can contribute to the success of their schools and ensure that most of their students attain the required performance. In any learning institution, destructive leadership behavior can lead the institution performing poorly. The importance of the study was therefore to determine the extent to which the lives of students are affected by destructive leadership behavior. The research also reviewed the level to which the performance of a school can be affected by such destructive leadership behavior.
Purpose of the Research
Due to the increasing cases of destructive leadership behavior in different organizations such as companies, hospitals, and schools, the research was conducted with the purpose of identifying any case of such behaviors. Carrying out the research helped me to gain a further understanding of these practices and eventually, I was able to identify them easily in case I came across such in my institution. One of the other purposes of the study was to differentiate the difference between destructive leadership behaviors and strict leadership behaviors. People tend to confuse the two, yet they are entirely different, and the research served the purpose of identifying this difference.
Rationale of why I am studying this Area
Choosing a school setting was based on a number of reasons. The main reason was that a school is a stage where the future of most individuals is determined. Destructive leadership behaviors at this early stage of life can end up destroying the lives of many children today. With this research, a solution was offered on how to cope with these behaviors, and this would have the effect of ensuring brighter future for most kids. The other reason for choosing this area was because Im also in a school. With the help of this study, I was able to determine whether I was experiencing destructive leadership behavior or not.
Strength of Leadership
From this case study, this research question was answered by determining that one of the strength of a leader in a school is to have belief in his or her students. From this belief, such a leader will be motivating students on a daily basis, and this will be reflected in the performance of the school as well as individual student performances. Another strength is to focus entirely on improving the different teaching methods so as to take care of the needs of all the students, from those who adopt new ideas quickly to slow learners. A school leader can also demonstrate strength by focusing on the performance of individual students.
Shortcomings of leadership
Does the leader has any concerns about the performance of the entire school or that of individual students? If the answer is no, then such a leader shows destructive leadership behaviors. Performance in any learning institution is considered as the biggest priority, and any school leader who is not concerned with performance is not a competent leader. Teaching practices should also be considered since they are the primary determinants of performance.
Rectifying Shortcomings in Leadership
In a school, shortcomings of a leader can be rectified by encouraging competition with other learning institution of the same level. Through healthy competition, a leader can determine whether his or her school is underperforming or not. Assessing the performance of each student at the end of a semester can also prove to be good leadership qualities as this is a sign of concern.
