The Communication Process

The communication process is categorized into three components. The components are the sender, channel of transmission, and the receiver. The sender is an individual who sends the message. The message is the data to be delivered. Before a message the sending of a message, it requires encoding. Encoding is the process of transforming a message into a way that it can be easily sent (Hovland, Janis & Kelley,1953).

A communication channel also needs to be chosen. The channel is described as the means that the message is being sent. Examples of communication channels include writing, speaking, video and audio transmissions and emails (Miller, 2005).

The receiver is the target of communication. To understand the message, the receiver must have the ability of encoding the message. In case the receiver cannot decode the message, then it is said to have failed. For example, when one is sent a message in a foreign language, then the message can be said to have failed (Miller, 2005).

Cultural noise that can lead to people not understanding each other when communicating includes language, signs and symbols, and behaviors and beliefs. People who are from different cultures speak different languages. Different cultures have different signs and symbols of communication (Stansfeld & Matheson, 2003). Cultures have different behaviors and beliefs, which can lead to miscommunication. For instance, in some communities, it is important to maintain eye contact when communicating whereas, in others, it is taken to be rude.

I have experienced environmental noise. I was communicating with my friend, and then there was noise from car hooting outside the building. Noise pollution causes an increase in stress levels of persons, hence lowering their concentration level (Stansfeld & Matheson, 2003).
