Directions: Develop an educational series proposal for your community using one of the following four topics:
Bioterrorism/Disaster
Environmental Issues
Primary Prevention/Health Promotion
Secondary Prevention/Screenings for a Vulnerable Population
Planning Before Teaching:
Name and Credentials of Teacher:
Estimated Time Teaching Will Last:
45 minutes Location of Teaching:
Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church
Supplies, Material, Equipment Needed:
Screen projector, laptop, paper handouts Estimated Cost: 0
Screen projector was provided by the church, laptop is owned by the teacher.
Community and Target Aggregate: targeting parents and guardians.
Target audience at the church was over 100 families. Most adults were over the age of 30.
Children were present.
Topic: Primary Prevention/ Health Promotion, Hand washing
Epidemiological Rationale for Topic (statistics related to topic): According to World Health Organization (2014), hand washing with soap and water could reduce 50% of the diseases.
Hand washing with alcohol-based sanitizer reduced the risk of respiratory infection by 20%
Nursing Diagnosis: Diarrhea and respiratory infections were caused by lack of awareness of proper hand washing techniques.
Readiness for Learning: Identify the factors that would indicate the readiness to learn for the target aggregate. Include emotional and experiential readiness to learn.
The learners asked questions about hand washing and participating in group discussions.
Listening and answering the questions asked.
Learning Theory to Be Utilized: Explain how the theory will be applied.
Handouts on hand washing, brief group discussion about infections and how hand washing is effective in our daily lives.
Goal: Healthy People 2020 (HP2020) objective(s) utilized as the goal for the teaching. Include the appropriate objective number and rationale for using the selected HP2020 objective (use at least one objective from one of the 24 focus areas). If an HP2020 objective does not support your teaching, explain how your teaching applies to one of the two overarching HP2020 goals.
My teaching on primary prevention of hand washing adheres to HP2020 objectives on hand washing that deals with promoting the reduction of cases of diseases caused by lack of hand washing in the population. Education on the preventive measures needed to be taken seriously in order to reduce the number of people affected.
How Does This HP2020 Objective Relate to Alma Atas Health for All Global Initiatives (See page 116 in the textbook)? This HP2020 objective relates to Alma Atas Health for All Global Initiatives by supporting the goal of eliminating health diversities worldwide. It recognizes that hand washing is affected by economic, social and behavioral factors.
Develop Behavioral Objectives (Including Domains), Content, and Strategies/Methods:
Behavioral Objective and Domain
Example Third-grade students will name one healthy food choice in each of the five food groups by the end of the presentation. (Cognitive Domain) Content (be specific)
Example The Food Pyramid has five food groups which are.
Healthy foods from each group are.Unhealthy foods containing a lot of sugar or fat are. Strategies/Methods
(label and describe)
Example Interactive poster presentation of the Food Pyramid. After an explanation of the poster and each food category, allow students to place pictures of foods on the correct spot on the pyramid. Also, have the class analyze what a child had for lunch by putting names of foods on the poster and discussing what food group still needs to be eaten throughout day.
1.
Students will be able to identify the steps on how to wash their hands.
1.
Students acknowledge the products required for hand washing. They include; soap and water, and alcohol-based sanitizer.
1.
Introduction- the class begins by showing a video of families washing their hands with soap, water and alcohol-based sanitizer.
2.
Students will be able to identify when to wash their hands.
2.
The lecture teaches the learners when to wash their hands either before or after coming into contact with people, objects or things. 2.
After the session, the learners engage in brief group discussions about hand washing.
3.
Students will be able to define infections and state the prevention measures.
3.
Infection is an illness that is caused by bacteria or virus.
The most common prevention is by washing your hands frequently thus limiting transfer of bacteria. 3.
In this lesson, the learners will demonstrate the hand washing techniques using the soap and water and alcohol-based sanitizer.
4.
Students will be able to identify the proper techniques during hand washing.
4.
Inspection: wash hands before or after preparing food.
Wash hands after visiting the toilet.
Scrub all surfaces including under your fingernails when washing your hands. 4.
The hand washing video will be used to demonstrate proper inspection.
Creativity: How was creativity applied in the teaching methods/strategies? The audience participated through question and answer techniques during the presentation.
The video enabled the students to learn more about the hand washing techniques and the correct products to be used.
Planned Evaluation of Objectives (Outcome Evaluation): Describe what you will measure for each objective and how.
Open dialogue- the topic discussed would arise out of curiosity among the learner; therefore I would leave the forum open for any discussions.
Questionnaire- was the video demonstration constructive? Yes
Question and answer method- I would ask oral questions based on the topic expecting immediate answers.
Pre-assessment and post-assessment- using the video, I would ask the learners if they would do anything differently.
Planned Evaluation of Goal: Describe how and when you could evaluate the overall effectiveness of your teaching plan.
At the end of the year, I would ask the church counselors if any of the members of the church came to ask for assistance.
I would ask the chief of the community if any members had asked for medical treatment or advice.
Planned Evaluation of Lesson and Teacher (Process Evaluation):
The questionnaire provided will contain questions such as: Did the session meet your expectations? (The answer would be in rank numerical order, number 1 been no and number 5 been yes) How efficient was the presentation?
Barriers: What are potential barriers that may arise during teaching and how will those be handled?
Different education level and language barrier: as a teacher I would adjust the teachings according to the different education background and use simple and clear vocabularies.
Communication: How will you begin your presentation (hook them in)? How will you end your presentation (go out with a bang)? What nonverbal communication techniques will you employ?
At the beginning of the lesson I would start with a demonstration to introduce the topic. I will involve learners to participate in washing their hands using soap, water and alcohol-based sanitizer.
During the lesson, I would demonstrate the process of hand wash together with a few learners would instruct the learners to return to their seats. I would tell the learners that washing hands prevents bacterial infections. I would let them know that washing their hands frequently would reduce the transfer of infections.
At the end of the class, I will show a YOUTUBE video highlighting a hand washing Dettol campaign. By using this it will encourage them since the video is about their daily living. In the day to day activities people tend to believe things when they see. They have to see it in order to believe it and relating to social media make it even more appealing.
