People always question the value of getting a college degree or settling for the everyday job. Attending college is costly, and it also means that one has to designate about four years for studies. In respect to this, there will always be positive and negative reasons for getting the degree. Receiving a college degree is an important step in life because it opens up opportunities in life. One of the benefits of receiving a college degree is the fact that it is alleyway to a prosperous career. Most people when entering college usually have no idea what career path to follow. One common aspect is that people know that with a college degree they are likely to secure a good job that pays better, and one that is secure. These benefits and others push people to create time and resources to get a college degree.
In college there are other benefits apart from gaining knowledge on the field of study one has chosen. College education prepares a person both socially and intellectually. From college a person can think analytically, can communicate critical ideas and can understand complex issues in the world. In simpler terms, college helps mold a person into a better professional individual. Since college offers an array of skills, many graduates venture into fields that they did not study in school. College, therefore, opens up other opportunities that are always not there for those that have not passed through a higher level of education (Thornton, 2010). Moreover, todays economy has broadened, and employment options are dwindling for those with only a high school diploma. Most high school diploma graduates work in the service industry, with low pay and those that do not offer opportunities for advancement. College graduates, on the other hand, have skills that qualify them for a wide range of opportunities in fields that offer good rewards.
Critical thinking is the ability to understand and identify the logical connections between ideas, in the quest to solving problems (Paul and Elder, 2014). A critical thinker, therefore, looks for information that will solve a particular problem. In my critical thinking assignment, I systematically organized my ideas and the information researched on the topic so as to come up with an effective argument. In my critical thinking, I avoided emotional constrictions, and this ensured that I was not biased.
Other areas where critical thinking can be used is in the global economy. Since the knowledge of the economy is driven by technology, one is required to act on the changes effectively and promptly. The global economy requires the analytical skills and skills on how to integrate varied sources of information to solve problems. Excellent critical thinking skills are important in the fast changing economy.
In my quest to being a better critical thinker, I intend to improve my skills by adjusting my perspective on issues. This means understanding my biases because human judgment can be frail and subjective (Paul and Elder, 2014). I also intend to read more books and set aside a few minutes to improve my brain function. To be a good critical thinker, one has to facts and data available to have a good argument.
