Section 1: Elements of Refined Communication Executive Summary
Irish and Weiss (2013) utilize the chapter "Elements of Refined Communication" to discuss the principles essential in presenting information logically in a sentence as well as a paragraph. A writer has the mandate to ensure that the information he or she provides catches the attention of the reader. Therefore, there should be a logical structuring of sentences for easy comprehension by the reader. Subsequently, the paragraph structure is essential as it determines the ability of the reader to comprehend the information presented by the writer. As such, sentences should be appropriately structured and free of vague information that is irrelevant to the reader.
In most cases, it is not appropriate to begin sentences with "It is." A writer can use the "find" option on the word processor to replace "It is" with the appropriate nouns or pronouns. Besides the sentence structure, the effective structuring of paragraphs impacts the reader's ability to comprehend information. A paragraph has two power positions which are the introductory and end sentence. Mostly, a reader can easily remember the information of a paragraph if the primary points are outlined in the opening and the end sentences of a paragraph(Irish & Weiss,2013). Therefore, emphasizing the information on the two power positions determines the ability of the writer to catch the reader's attention.
Section 2: Personal Reflection
The chapter was very informative in that it provides information concerning the effectiveness of proper sentence structures and their impact on facilitating the reader's understanding. Furthermore, I like the chapter as it explains the importance of generating flow in sentences as well as paragraphs. Additionally, the chapter explains how to properly structure inappropriate sentences, an aspect that I find essential to my writing. Henceforth, I will utilize the materials or the principles discussed to change my writing orientation and ensure that my sentences are appropriately structured. In writing, it is crucial to consider the reader's view and the means to impact their understanding by appropriately structuring the sentences and paragraphs.
While using the word processor, I understood the mechanics that are useful to the writing process. For instance, a writer can utilize the 'find and replace' options to change information in the sentences to achieve an appropriate structure that will catch the reader's attention and facilitate easy comprehension. Subsequently, the chapter enhanced my understanding of the power of the introductory and the end sentences as the power positions in a paragraph; they contain primary information that a reader can easily remember.
Section 3: Questions
Question 1: Should the information in the end or concluding sentence summary the introductory information?
Question 2: Is it always essential to consider the reader's perception or views while writing?
Section 4: Personal Application
I will ensure I proofread my work to ensure that the sentence and paragraph structures are appropriately structured to catch the reader's attention. Mostly, the failure to correct written work contributes to grammatical among other errors of writing that are avoidable through proofreading. Further, I will begin to emphasize the opening and the concluding sentences of a paragraph and ensure they contain the primary information that is relevant to the reader. Previously, I would only emphasize the opening sentence while disregarding the end sentence; however, I plan to change the way I present my power positions by ensuring that they contain the essential information that a reader can remember.
