Developmental milestones function as the checkpoints that determine what the average child is capable of doing at a certain age during his| her developmental process. To know the developmental milestones of different ages of a child assists healthcare professionals, teachers, and parents to understand the proper development of a child and also act as an aid in identifying the potential problems associated with delayed development. In a childs development, there are different categories of Developmental milestones such as language and Communication milestones, emotional and social milestones, Cognitive milestones, and physical milestones. In that case, Developmental milestones are the main important ways of measuring the childs developmental progress in several critical areas. On the other hand, ego is a personality psychological component that is represented by conscious decision-making process.
Therefore, as a family counselor, I would like to address ego qualities of the different Developmental milestones like hope, will, and purpose. The ego quality of hope is an Enduring belief that one can attain ones essential and profound wishes. In that regard, for the children of the age which are between the first two months need to develop the ego quality of hope. Thus as parents has the opportunity of developing such ego quality confidence for them to build trust instead of mistrust between them and the children. To build the ego quality of hope to children parents have a primary responsibility to carry out. Due to that parents need to learn on how to correct children s behaviors gently without over-reacting to facilitate the attachment to occur. Parents should try as they can to please them, be genuinely attractive, and show them that they are worth attaching. In that connection, parents should be aware once a child has no hope also in their abilities there is no belief hence they turn out to be victims in a dim dark world. Therefore, the only way for children to develop the ego quality of hope is through attachment to their parents. And such cases apply to both blood and adopted children.
In conjunction to that, there is the ego quality of will which refers to a determination to exercise self-control and free choice. The willful stage is the second process which occurs to a child once he| she has finished the attachment stage. For this ego quality, parents need to assume and respond to their children as calmly as possible to enable them to develop courage and self-control. Nevertheless, there is an ego quality of Purpose which is regarded as the Courage to pursue and imagine valued goals. It is also a very crucial stage that a child should not escape because if she |he does it may lead to immobilizing guilt, where a child has a limited ability to imagine and play, will rely heavily on adults, hang back from groups, and be fearful. Therefore it is wise not to rush them but guide them on how to go through stage three for them to be easier to face stage four without guilt and fear.
