Samantha, Evans, and Mason live with their single mother Olivia in Texas. Over time Mason overhears Olivia arguing with her boyfriend, saying she has no free time due to parenting.
Olivia soon moves the family to Houston near the University of Houston, where she could attend and finish her degree to get a better job. Masons father visits Houston and takes his children out for bowling, as he had promised to spend more time with them. After he brings the children home, he argues with Olivia while Samantha and Mason watched from afar. Olivia takes Mason to one of her classes and soon introduces him to her professor, Bill Welbrock, Mason sees them flirt.
Soon Bill marries Olivia and their two families blend including Bills children from his previous marriage. Mason and Samantha get enrolled in the same school as their step siblings. Mason soon befriends a girl called Nichole who had a crush on him.
Masons father bonds strongly with Samantha and Mason over time as he could take them out for a day in Houston and sometimes sleepovers at his house with his roommate Jimmy. Meanwhile, Olivia keeps up with her education since Bill came up with strict parenting style which included many chores for the kids. Soon Bill becomes abusive due to his drunk nature and begins to assault Olivia and her children, this forces Olivia to file a divorce and to move her family to her friends house.
Her children grow up, and Masons father learns that Samantha has a boyfriend and talks to her and Mason on contraception. He and Mason go out camping and bond over music and Masons attraction to girls. Mason soon gets bullied by other students at the school, and he is teased on camping trips but starts receiving attention from girls. Olivia is then teaching psychology at a college and moves in with Jim, a student, and Bosnian war veteran.
Mason soon engages in marijuana and alcohol, his father later remarries and gets another baby, and he takes Samantha and Mason to visit his wifes parents. His dad gives him a suit and a mix cd while Masons grandparents give him a Bible and an old shotgun. Mason gets counsel from his photography teacher who sees potential and tries to help him. This is revived with open arms as Mason longed-for a mentor and a stable male figure in his life. One evening Mason goes for a party and meets Sheena who becomes his girlfriend. They enjoyed each others presence to the point of losing track of time. On coming home late after the party, Jim confronts him. From this dispute, Olivia and Jim later split up due to his strictness and controlling nature. This was a relief to Olivias children as they were not fond of Jim. Mason graduates from high school and wins a photographic contest, and I awarded a scholarship. He dropped his wild lifestyle and started pursuing him photography profession.
Samantha also becomes successful in her endeavors and soon was out on her own. The family was now living separately and with more peace than before. Olivia meets up Mason and Samantha for lunch and asks them to sort out their possession as he was planning to sell the house. Later that year Mason prepares to leave for college, and Olivia breaks down in dissolution by how fast life moves. It seemed that Olivias children who were once little had grown. They were now adults and very independent. Only then did Olivia realized that she had spent only a little time with her kids and had a little influence on them.
From the movie, Bills cruelty, abusive and setting strict rules due to his drunkard nature resulted to a disagreement between Olivia. His children were also not spared and later led to a divorce making his kids grow with a cold heart towards him. Olivias nature of moving from one relationship to another made her children grow distant with her, and this made them opt to stay with their father who they felt was responsible and could take good care of them against their mothers numerous boyfriends. Along the way she found out time had passed for her to be with her children as they had grown old. Olivias children developed a different character as Mason began to use drugs due to the nature of things at home. Luckily, they were all able to survive the instability at home but not making mistakes of their own.
Domestic violence is a thorny issue, especially in the modern society. It affects a variety of families indiscriminate of gender, race, economic status or religion. It can ruin family cohesion and raises future generations without the basic building blocks of a family resulting in a generation that does not value the family structure. Through sharing and strong support, people can come out of this stigma and hopefully eradicate this phenomenon. Civil education can also be instrumental in sensitizing the public to help those affected learn how to deal with such situations.
