Introduction

Children are brought up mainly by the people that surround them and are influenced by their behaviors and actions. Bronfenbrenner's theory indicates that there are five layers which surround the child and these layers or systems all affect the child differently.

The microsystem consists of the family, school, friends and the community and as such, this is the immediate influencers of the child. The Microsystems during our times and our grandparents or parents times differs a lot in the sense that the systems are not as close-knit to the children as they were before. During our parent's time, the family unit which is the most influential to a child was involved in their children's lives as they would make time to nurture their children, but in our time, our parents were busier and their time was divided between work and the family. This difference would then mean that most of our values were learned from the other units like the school and the other four levels. The schools were also quite different during our parents times as compared to when we were growing up. This change is because during our parents time schools were more focused on the growth of the child wholly beside just the arithmetic and science, but during our time the teachers were most concerned about getting their classes taught and nothing further about the welfare of the child. The community during our time growing up was not as involved in the bringing up of children as was the case during our parents time.

I think this change is detrimental to society as a whole because if the microsystems are not as concerned about the value development of the child, then the child does not grow wholly leading to adults with no values at all being brought up.

I think technology has affected the mesosystems negatively. In the case of the relationship between the school and family, if the child is allowed to be on social media without restriction at home, this will affect their performance in school. Once the child is hooked to social media at home, they will not be able to concentrate in class, and they will also transfer the vices they watch on social media to school. If they can copy the behavior on social media of drugs and substance abuse, for instance, they will most likely not be able to finish school, but they would eventually drop out.

Responses

Ashly Lane

It is true Ashly that family dynamics have changed since the days of our grandparents in the sense that parents do not spend as much time with their children. With this change of dynamics, the children then learn a lot from other avenues and are then bound to learn values which are not supposed to learn. The school has also changed as well because the teachers are not motivated, and without the motivation, they are not dedicated to nurturing the children like our grandparents were nurtured.

Carquella Clemons

Looking at it in the aspect of how children speak to their parents and teachers is an indication that the microsystems have changed for the worst. Children because of not being given the attention by their microsystems have mostly learned from the wrong avenues and as such the different attitudes within the different generations.
