Will Hunting is a janitor working at MIT. He has a high I.Q, but he prefers to work as a janitor in a prestigious institution instead of fulfilling his full potential. When Will solves a complicated maths problem, Professor Gerald Lambeau helps him reach his potential. Will argue that what if he solves a complex math problem and then it turns out it was a location of rebels in Africa or the Middle East. The military would go in and bomb the village and thousands of people who will don't have a problem with gets killed. He argues that even the marine who go there to fight may get shot and when he comes back home he wont get a job. Professor Lambeau enlist the help of his friend Sean who is a psychologist to help will sort up his life (Goodwill Hunting).

When Lambeau met Will working on the problem he had put on the board, he asks him not to graffiti on people's work. Thats peoples work. You cant graffiti here. Dont you walk away from me? The conversation does not continue because Will runs away. Lambeau and Tom are surprised that Will has solved the problem. Later on, Will is arrested for beating up someone. Lambeau helps him avoid being jailed under the condition that he will meet with the professor ones per week and visit a therapist. At this point, the friendship starts to grow as the professor got to know Will. When he later helped him avoid jail, their relationship starts blooming.

Sean and Lambeau wonder why Will is hiding and working as a janitor. They realize that Will does not trust anybody because he was abandoned when he was a kid by the people who were supposed to love him. Their friendship did not start well because Will was antagonizing Sean and Sean was not impressed. He got angry and told Will to talk to him with respect. You watch your mouth! Dont you ever patronize me. Will is not interested in therapy, and at one session, he just sat in the therapist office counting seconds until the time was up. He finally opens up and tells Sean about his interest in Skyla (Goodwill hunting).

Will is scared of going out with Skyla because he wants the first perfect impression to remain unchanged. However, his therapist tells him that nobody is perfect and the most important thing is to get a person who they are ideal for each other. Will is informed that although he may know everything about the earth, it is only by giving his relationship with Skyla a chance. Youre not perfect. And let me save you the suspense, this girl you met isnt either.

Although Will is brilliant, he hangs out with the local boy. He has difficulty managing his emotions, and he solves issues when angry my physically attacking someone or using verbal insults. He has a hard time maintaining a relationship, and he is scared of spoiling the perfect moment he had with Skylar. The verbal and physical assaults can be a way of concealing his real feeling. Since he was abandoned when he was young, he has difficulty trusting anyone outside his cycle of friends. Wills learned friends are the genius who died a long time ago. Will could have picked these people because they could not rise from the dead and hurt him. He is careful in avoiding relationships or getting into situations where he could get hurt (Goodwill Hunting).

Will can connect with Sean because Sean understands him and explains to him how life is. The relationship was not smooth at first. When Will criticized Seans painting, Sean did not like the criticism. I thought what you said to me the other day about my painting. I have stayed up half the night thinking about it. Something occurred to me. Youre just a kid. Sean tells Will that he is afraid to speak because he is scared of what he might say. He tells Will although he is a genius, he is not intelligent but a cocky scared young man. Sean wants Will to talk about himself if he wants to be helped. Will is told that he cant know someone life just because he has seen a painting of them. Just the same way Sean cannot know about Wills life by reading Oliver Twist. Their relationship starts to grow when Will starts opening up to Lambeau. Will sees working as a plumber or a carpenter as an important job. When Lambeau tells him that his dad used to lay bricks to get him an education, Will says thats an honorable job. Exactly. Thats a noble profession. What's wrong with fixing someone's car so they can get to work the next day? Will tells Sean he would like to be a shepherd. He does not see anything wrong with doing manual jobs. The math department is excellent, but Will is skeptical on how the knowledge may be used. He claims that politicians may use their math knowledge to attack other nations.

According to him, the people are used by politicians to achieve some political gains and then left to out. He provides an example of a soldier who is sent to battle to remove a regime that is not friendly to the United States. When the soldier gets back home, he finds out that he does not have a job. To make matters worse, the job that he had would be given to the guy that he was fighting because the man was willing to work below minimum wage without even taking breaks. He put a question to his professor friend about the possibility of cracking a code which is then used to launch an attack in a remote village in Africa or the Middle East. Wills says he does not have a problem with people he has never met. The Politians will just use his knowledge to kill innocent people so that a government that will sell oil cheaply to the US is installed (Goodwill Hunting).

Lambeau is not convinced by Wills explanations that he is not interested in math. He inquires why someone who is not interested in math is sneaking around solving maths problem. Lambeau is angry at Will for throwing his skills away. He tells Will that there is only a handful of people who can do what he does and it is sad to see him throwing all that away. Most of the days I wish I never met you. Because I could sleep at night, and I would not have to walk around that there is someone out there like you. And I didnt have to watch you throw it all away. Wills attitude toward government agencies and the way they use technology is disapproving. When an NSA agent came to try and recruit him, he was not interested and wanted to know what they do at the agency. Will was concerned about what his skills in math will be used for by the government. He argues that politicians use their knowledge to cause chaos and enrich a few people while affecting countries with less military power. He would rather be a janitor or someone who repairs car than break a code that will be used to kill thousands of people that he has no quarrel with (Good will hunting).

Although will agreed to work with Lambeau, he still respected those people who do manual labor and he terms it as an honorable occupation. Professor Lambaeu agrees with him but argues that someone with brains like his should not be working manual jobs but should instead be working on solving complex problems. He explains that he would rather be original than copy someone else work. He sarcastically tells Sean that instead of breaking codes, he could as well bomb some village, kill the living creatures in the Artic by spilling oil and maybe he will get a chance to be elected president.

The negative attitude towards the governments and its use of mathematical solutions is what made Will become a janitor instead of looking for employment in some corporation or government agency.
