Sex and the City (2008) is a film directed by Michael Patrick king. The film portrays sexuality in New York City. The film describes four beautiful women Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda, and Samantha who are in the mid-thirties love lives. They are all struggling with the significance of men influence, marriage, their desires and dating lives. The film shows the life in the city and how single women sleep around. The director used the four charming and sexy ladies to deliver his message to the audience. The characters are successful professional females who are leaving their lives with what they have achieved by their handwork. It shows many features of gender. Throughout the film, the ladies pride and happiness are in contrast. They are boosting for being single, and yet they are running after men who can marry them, yet they claim to be independent (Gerhard, 2005). They are always after a husband, and dating lives show that they allow men to have power over them. The film director uses the four beautiful and sexy ladies to show the dilemmas that women face in their daily lives and the critical advice women exchange so that they can be able to cope with their lives. Sex and the City clearly reflect the power in women through their sexuality. In bringing in the theme of marriage, the director tries to create an entertaining film by displaying a close view of dependent, fruitful and self-reliant women as capable of creating happiness in their single lives seems incomplete. Using the criterion, the audience discovers that the characters, no matter how they may try to attempt reject it; they are all yearning to become happily married. These characters tribulations and trials as the struggle to get the right man who can love them give the film a brilliant storyline for each scene. The movie portrays the four main characters as single and happy which show the chances of being an independent woman in the current American society. It depicts the meaning that a woman does not have to depend on a man so that she can make it in life. During the film, Charlotte marries, and she is happy, Miranda and her husband and their kid (Michael, 2008).

The audience of sex and city are persuaded to believe that they can employ the freedom and joy of singlehood just like the four women in the film. The movie depicts the characters as confident, successful and happy in the society. The actions of the actors make the audience to fell connected if they are single and also get an assurance that being single is alright. The show touches a broad range of issues affecting females in the society. These issues include homosexuality, the ceiling of glass and single parenthood making it reflect every woman in the society (Michael, 2008).

To show how women in the society are independent, Michael uses the carriers and lifestyles of the four characters. The star character, Carrie Bradshaw acted by Sarah Parker is a glamorous and sexy woman, who shows her class by her fashion and expensive footwear. Every woman can directly relate to her life. Carrie is trend setting, beautiful and a successful newspaper columnist. Carrie just like her girlfriends is struggling to live a good life and have fun to the fullest while she falls in love with Mr. Big, a charismatic man. According to Carrie, being single means, you are taking your time to decide how you want your life to be. The author uses her love with Mr. Big to show romance in the current society in America. Michael Patrick uses another actor Kim Cattrall character, Samantha who is a consultant on Public Relations matters to show that the women in the society are confident and how they are aggressive to have great sex.

As the character come out in the film, she expects the best in life from all her activities, for example, yoga classes with an appeal for sex. She has no expectation of becoming a wife or a girlfriend to any man. Charlotte York played by Kristin Davis is another character who clearly shows feminine romance. She is desperately searching for a husband. She believes in love and says that women just want to be rescued. This action makes her helpless whenever he engages in a relationship with a man looking for completion but end up hurt. Cynthia Nixon who takes place for Miranda Hobbes is a skilled New York City lawyer. She is very hand working and ambitious in all she does, and this makes her very successful despite being single.

Four main characters in the film who are women and well as all other actors in this movie portray one common thing; all are searching for a husband and also a relationship that will ultimately lead to marriage. The girls in the movie Sex and the City have an ambivalent perspective about the wedding, from one angle they avoid everything that ties them to marriage but on the other always regard marital as an ultimate goal in their lives. During the film, Carrie does not want to fall I n love and want to maintain herself as a single independent lady, but deep in her heart she is helpless in romance and always wish to find a man who can love and marry her. At the beginning of the movie, Carrie is a strong single woman who does her things independently. This does not take long as she follows Mr. Big helplessly and falls for him. When she meet Mr. big, she is happy and excited and thinks that she will live happily with him. This goes against her thinking, and she ends up being so unhappy.

On another scene, Carrie falls in love with the man who is honest, genuine and faithful by the name Aiden Shaw. She later breaks the long relationship with him. In these two instances, the audience can see that Carrie treasures relationship and she is learning every detail of love and marriage (French, 2015). Samantha is another character who rejects the notion of love and marriage. According to Samantha, love does not guarantee a happy marriage. Samantha is previously hurt in her previous relationship, and maybe that is the reason why she is happy relationships and marriages. Despite the fact that Samantha closes her door to her heart, she unexpectedly falls in love with two scenes.

The director, Michael Patrick achieves his interpretations in the film using different cinematic devices. He uses camera shots, editing, pace, stereotypes and images to portray Carrie as a metaphor to denote the city. At the start of the scene, there is the use of few camera shots while the director gives Carrie a close shot and the background on the stage is ignored. The main reason why the director gives Carrie a close shot is to focus her emotions. Michael wants to show the audience the character Carrie portrays using her feelings. The emotions she displays are happiness, confidence, and relaxation. Carrie, being educated and successful was happy with her single life (Michael, 2008).

Michael Patrick, the director of Sex and the City movie, uses film score to add quality of the film. The song Labels or Love helps the manager to deliver the message that the four girls do not want to fall in love and what they want in the society is a class. The soundtrack says Shopping for labels, shopping for love. The music is also used to capture the audience attention and show the moods of the characters. In different scenes music is loud and fast, it arouses the audience who are watching a motion picture. Alternatively, the music is played soft and slows in some emotional scenes; it brings a calm emotion to the movie for example when Carrie is heartbroken by Mr. Big, the soundtrack delivers the emotions. She is sad and desperate. Music drives a film speedily forward or sometimes slows it down. Carrie says we are dressed from head to toe in love, the only label that never goes out of style (Michael, 2008).

Using music skillfully can hide weak cinematography since the minds of the audiences are carried away by the music. Music on the film intensifies and brings out the inner thoughts characters. Music invests a film with gaiety, grandeur, misery and terror. Finally, music acts as a communication link between the audience and the screen, therefore incorporating them into a single experience. The song dress up in love is another song that the director uses to deliver the message of love to the audience. This soundtrack is played when two characters, for example, Carrie and Mr. Big play in a scene to show their love. This delivers the mood of love in the scene.

The way the four ladies dress serves as a metaphor in the film. Carrie is the character who wears the best designer dresses that are full of creativity. The color symbolizes her inner character in life. She is open to life she believes that there are various ways that a person can live happily. Her life is portraying the current lifestyle of women in New York City. Using feminist critic, the director tries to put in the open the trend of domination when it comes to gender. It portrays the appropriate and standard behaviors as they are as described by the men in the women in the film. In sex and the city movie, men are viewed as the sole beings to happiness. All the women look upon a man who will give them a happy future and make them complete. This reflects the idea of marriage in America when women depend upon men to their lives whole. Women are like sex objects for men in the society. When Samantha refuses to sleep with her boyfriend, he leaves her.

On another scene, Michael portrays Carrie with narrowed horizons. Two Horizons shows that her love life is not working and she also receive a rejection from the society for being a single woman. The writer wants to deliver his theme of gender inequalities where a woman is seen an incomplete without a husband. The film shows sex variations because when a man sleeps around, the society accepts it and they do not complain about it. In the same situation, a woman is regarded as dirty and with no moral standings.

The show Sex and the City represent a particular image of post-feminism. The film clearly displays the significance of sexual equality among women. The women in todays society are working day and night to flirt around while looking very sexy. The women have style as shown by their dressing and make-ups. They women in America are playful and sleep with many men they come across with when searching for a right man. They disregard the traditions norms that a man is the only being with authority and power. In this film, it is vivid that if a woman makes a decision she can talk, work and have sex just like men do (Gerhard, 2005).

Carrie and her friends are economically empowered, sexually liberated and well educated. They women are sophisticated and successful despite being single. The women are also materialistic in the society since all they want money and success (Gerhard, 2005). Samantha says that she cannot marry a broke man. Carrie is very excited when a man she slept with leaves her money on her bed.

The setting of the film is a comedy since there is a happy ending for all the three characters. They are all happy to get their charming prince men who make their lives whole and remove the discrimination they face from the society for being single. At the age of thirty and above the characters thought that they would never get men who are true and faithful. The director makes everyone happy at the end of the film hence showing the audience that a...
