The human being is an emotional being. People experience all kinds of emotions ranging from happiness, sadness, depression, excitement, anger, anxiety and grief. Emotions play a crucial part in our lives, and their importance cannot be overlooked. Emotions determine how well/how badly we do something when to do it and give people a reason to do it. Most things humans do are based on emotions and to call someone emotionless or incapable of feeling is one of the most common social lies. To feel is a norm, it is what makes us human. There is a broad range of emotions, and individuals have the ability to feel all of them each at a time. It is also possible to experience more than one feeling at a go. The concepts of loyalty and rebellion are significantly affected by emotion. The way a person feels about somebody or something determines a lot whether their loyalty or resistance. Feelings that promote adherence include love, trust, transparency and happiness. On the contrary, sense of hate, oppression, betrayal and authority will invoke rebellion from the even the loyal people. In the book Nineteen-Eighty Four, sexual rebellion and political revolution themes are evident and interconnected. This paper aims to establish the relationship between sexual rebellion and political resistance in Nineteen Eighty-Four.

Julie and Winston Smith enhance the theme of sexual revolution. Of course, the two are adults and are free to choose their sexual orientation. However, the fact that they belonged to opposing political parties put their love and relationship on the jeopardy. Julia is Winstons love and object of desire as well as his ally in the political rebellion of the Party. Although these two characters fall in love and are seemingly compatible, they have many differences in their style and insight. Political rebellion is their primary concern, and sexual rebellion is a just an issue in the passing. Before Julia declares her love for Winston in a note, Winston had strong feelings of hate for her. He thought she was the enemy and did not for one second consider making an ally of her. However, both had the same goal, they were against the Party and wanted to see the end of it, Julia more than Winston.

To Julia, sexual rebellion is directly related to the political insurgency. Julia is depicted as a cunning, sexual and survivalist who would go to all extremes to destroy the Party even if that meant sleeping with Party members. Julia is quite aware of the power and strength of a woman, and in political rebellion, she is not hesitant to use it when need be. Great political heroes and warriors to go down in the books of history have had women as their downfall. In Biblical times, we know of King David and Samson whose downfall was a woman. Although Julia is very determined to destroy the Party, her approach concerning this matter is quite realistic and intuitive as compared to Winston who lives in a fantasy world. The greatest weapon one can have in a war is to be aware of their opponents abilities. Underestimating the opponent leads to overestimation and false confidence in oneself. It makes you think that you got it all figured out and that you have what it takes to conquer your enemy. It makes you feel invincible, and as a result, you fail to take into consideration other important factors. You fail to predict your opponent next move accurately, and for that reason, you walk into a war underprepared. This is the approach that Winston has on political rebellion. We see him greatly underestimating the power of the Party and having too much confidence and expectations in his plans.

With that being said, Julia uses sexual rebellion to break the Party but is quite aware that it is a long shot and does not bank on it so much. Besides using sex as a means of rebellion, Julia greatly enjoys sex and the biggest reason she engages it is to satisfy her desires. Her self-centered rebellion is just a masking of her deep need to fulfill her sexual fantasies. Safe to say, to Julia sexual rebellion does not play a significant role in enhancing the political rebellion because of her selfish motives and desires. As a fact, in Julies context, her sexual escapades cannot be accurately described as a sexual rebellion. The aspect of sexual rebellion in Julies adventures is only when she chooses Winston to be her partner. Before that, it is safe to say, that her original rebellion was getting in the way of political rebellion and these are the reasons. For something to be regarded as a sacrifice, in most cases, it should be something that is against your will, beliefs, and principles. It should be something you would rather not do in normal circumstances and the primary if not the sole reason for doing it, should be to achieve a particular goal. For Julia, her sexual escapades were more of a personal quest to fulfill her intimacy needs as opposed to invoking political rebellion.

It cannot be termed as a sacrifice if it is something she enjoyed doing and more still because she would engage in sex with just about anyone regardless of their political party affiliation. Julies sexual rebellion is not a revolt at all and as a fact it only got in the way of her pursuing matters of political importance. Unlike Winston, she never attacked the Party directly and preferred to go around it, and the impacts of her moves are very vague. Winston is the attached reason to her so-called sexual rebellion. Winston, on the other hand, falls victim to Julies seduction and games. In the process, he falls in love with Julie, and it is this love that makes Julie join his hand in political rebellion, not sex. It was the love that these two shared that led them to confess to OBrien. Sex without love is just a physical activity since no emotional attachments are included. With love, comes loyalty, empathy, interest, and transparency. A combination of all these factors is what fanned the flames of political rebellion. Sexual rebellion played a very insignificant role, if any, in the political resistance. To prove this statement, Julie was having sexual affairs with almost all Party members, yet it was until she met Winston, a person they shared a love with, that she decided to come clean about her stand on the political rebellion to OBrien.
