The relationship between these two institutions is interesting and of importance to their existence. The state and the society enjoy the liberty of negotiating the authority of the public and how it is exercised. At the same time, they are trying determining how the influence of people can be influenced. They usually focus on the issues such as those defining the obligations of the state as well as mutual rights of the society. The relationship between these two institutions is important that neither the society nor state can be seen to be acting in its capacity or isolation (Koithara 47). The focus is usually not on the particular institutional forms but the relations between the society and the state institutions. The relational functions of the society help in the development of the state. The state would derive its legitimacy through the positive interaction of the citizens with active and well organized civil societies.

The state society relations can be greatly impacted by the nature of the political defrayal existing within the society. The relations that exist between the state and society are usually based on lack of accountability and patronage, especially in conflict-affected and fragile states. The conflicted and fragile states usually have politicians who are selfish as they concentrate on benefiting from sponsorship. They embezzle funds from the income that are generated by the natural resources of the state. They usually have little motivation when engaging citizens and as such the politicians fail to establish an active and healthy public authority. The fact that power is concentrated in a few political elites usually leads to discrimination and exclusion of majority members of a society in public life.

A society made of selfish politicians usually lead to the exclusion of citizens from enjoying their rights and freedom within the public by employing violence and repression. This often leads to a weak and negative relationship between the state and the society. To increase the relations between the state and society, the politics of the state must be inclusive so as to contribute to social and political transformation. State building is critical in ensuring that the capacity of central state institutions are constructed in a way that it promote peace and development of the related societies. Several organizations are important in that they would ensure that the states are held responsible so that the leaders in charge of state funds do not misappropriate the funds (Koithara 127). At the same time, the public must be fully involved in decision-making so that the state can support only relevant and necessary projects within the society.

The state and society relationship are also strengthened as both are funded by donors so as to make the lives of the citizens comfortable and manageable. A good relationship between the state and society would see the proper establishment of policies and strategies that are needed to guide and protect communities so that there is a peaceful existence of people within the community. In the case of any misunderstanding and conflicts, the state, as well as the society, are expected to work together to ensure that proper channels are followed so as to restore peace within the organizations.
