What are the impacts of discrimination in the society?

Current legislation and social trends

There are several legislations meant to address the issue of discrimination in the country. States in the country have some state laws that seek to promote equality among all people living in each state. An example of a current state legislation is the Indiana Civil Rights Claims that encourages equal civil rights for all people residing in the state regardless of the background. Despite the numerous federal and national legislations prohibiting any form of discrimination, the minority groups continue to be victims of oppression (Boulton, 2016). There are campaigns all over by non-governmental organizations promoting equal rights for all people living in the country but still discrimination exists.

NASW chapter position and advocacy

The NASW advocates for equal rights for all people regardless of ethnic background. The NASW has been on the frontline fighting against discrimination in the country and enlightening citizens on the need to treat each other fairly. Through NASW chapter, victims of oppression are advised on the best way to handle their oppressors and who to report for legal actions. The efforts of NASW have helped to reduce discrimination significantly across the country.

Summary of literature

The US is a multicultural society, but unfortunately, people from certain cultures are discriminated. Despite the numerous legislations prohibiting any form of discrimination racism and xenophobia still, exists in the country. Most of the discrimination and oppression is race based, and the minority groups are the victims of the abuse. The minority groups are often victims of violent hate crimes, racist's comments and denial of equal rights either in the workplace or school (Boulton, 2016). According to Purnell (2014), discrimination is prevalent in conservative areas and is brought by lack of intolerance to other culture. People who discriminate the minority groups fail to appreciate the uniqueness of each culture and feel that their culture is the best. Based on the history of the country, slavery is a contributing factor to the continued discrimination against Blacks. Several studies have shown that some government agencies promote discrimination. The leading state agency that exhibits discrimination against the minority groups is the police department.

Most of the people pulled over and frisked by police are from the minority groups. Purnell (2014) pointed out that 80% stopped by police are either blacks or Latinos. A study by Ramirez (2015) also showed that 30% of minority groups arrested are detained for a felony. On the contrary, only 5% of whites arrested are detained (Ramirez, 2015). The criminal justice system also exhibits some form of discrimination against the minority groups. According to the Sentencing Commission, Blacks receive 12% longer sentences than Whites even if accused of a similar offense (Ramirez, 2015). In most of the court decisions, 25% of Blacks are likely to be sentenced to prisons than the Whites. The statistics point out that discrimination is very prevalent in the government agencies that should be fighting against the vice.
