Introduction
Companies such as Google and Bing are the most popular search engines used on daily bases. However, despite the meticulous effort by these companies, some seem to be trailing behind, while others seem to be on their path. For instance, Google appears to be perfectly succeeding; statistic has shown that Google exceeds 1.2 trillion searches annually and their market value worth over 400 billion dollars (Dennison 2018). While Bing looks to be struggling to maintain its position, Bing only captures 15% of the market share, which is not enough to turn to profits ("Is Microsoft's Bing Search Engine Officially A Disaster?" 2012). This report will analyses how Bing and Google utilise the Fayol's four managerial factors (planning, organizing, leading and controlling) differently (Norman 2017)
Firstly, planning is one of the critical elements as it gives the organisation direction (Griffin 2015). The role of a manager is to make sure that coming up with a calculated plan which meets the company end goal and objectives. Among the plans, there is the allocation of resources and also the delegation of responsibilities to the employees. They are also responsible for the setting of realistic timelines for meeting the tasks at hand. Checking on the progress of the work is also their responsibility to factor in some adjustments if necessary. A lot of the planning involves the working independently to make a choice what responsibilities should be given to which employees and giving preferences for a certain task which have set out timelines. However, communication is the major factor in getting things done and done correctly. The plans should be measurable and achievable to ensure a mutual benefit (Bovend'Eerdt, Botell and Wade 2009). When Google named its new Chief executive officer in 2015, Sundar Pichai, he stepped into action with the aim of achieving greater success than his predecessors (Ecker and Liozu, 2017).
As one of his primary goals, Pichai came in with a motto of strengthening Google's relationship with the customers. On the other hand, Steve Ballmer's planning skills have learned the company behind, as most of Bing's implemented plans do not consider the customers. Since much of the planning entails at times individual or independent responsibility to determine the viability of the institution, then the managerial post calls for an independent person with the big picture well outlined and articulated. Planning also enables a company to predict future events and the growth of the company. Google has always been a step ahead in predicting future trends in the market a factor that makes it meet the customers demand and delivery on time. This is done through deciding on the company's goal; strategies lay to attain the goals and the organization resources used to achieve these goals. Leading is the act of articulating clear visions while empowering the members. This is well seen in Google main administration. Without strong communication skills in a leader, strong and efficient leadership cannot be achieved. This leads to tainted organizational effectiveness which greatly hinders the growth of the entire company. Communicating frequently among leaders and the subordinate stuff enhances trust, mutual respect as well as a common vision. This ensures a corporate responsibility and a more intricate organization. This is evident in Google cooperation.
Secondly, organising is the aspect of allocating and coordinating different bodies to achieve the firm's goals (Griffin 2015). A manager's organization skills tell a lot about specific situations that should be done. It involves the structuring and establishment of internal processes while knowing what types of employees are best suited for certain task and who is not. They ensure that everything is running as it should be throughout a day's tasks and running. The organization is not based on solely the delegation of tasks to employees alone it is about making sure that the employees also have the required resources that will enable them to meet their assigned tasks. The managers also have the responsibilities of making sure that they can change the environment regarding new challenges. Adjusting to the new challenges can be in the form of altering a few timelines to fit in the re-allocation of tasks to the employees. As one of the key elements driving the success of Google, Pichai conducts extensive research before doing any project that may affect both the customers and the employee (Gorelick et al. 2017). Never the less, Bing's organisation highly dwells on the past statistics which does not guarantee proper feedback to the projects, questioning the leadership in the organisation (MANJOO 2012). Organisational skills are key to a manager's post as this entails the companies or departmental units running following the stipulated guidelines. Running everyone and everything in a company entails much of managerial skills. This should be done in watch of new challenges and changing trends. The great difference as seen from the two managers is one being in a position to respond to new challenges in a short time while the other being adamant to cope with changes in the business path. Being a good manager also calls for efficient leadership skills which are evident in Pichao other than the other manager. Organising in the aspect of structure working relationship enhances goal achieving. In this regard, the employees are motivated to achieve their goals which result in timely achieving the company's goals. Utilising the company's organising function is through the hierarchical structure which ensures members having roles that are interdependent on each other and interwound along each other to ensure a strong organizational structure as seen in the Google Company.
Thirdly good leadership skills require both artistic and scientific mind to coordinate employees, and the resources in the organisation (Griffin 2015) as one of the long-serving workers in Google Pichai has been an inspiration to the company, something that has motivated employees in the organisation. Pichai has been all through confident in commanding his team a factor that has seen major well in articulating significant changes as well as challenges. Managers can as well be leaders by functioning well even in small private interactions with their team by being supportive and encouraging. On the other hand, Ballmer's ability not to understand the employees' culture in the organisation has reduced their self-esteem affecting their performance (Thompson 2013).
Lastly, control refers to the ability to give directions to an organisation (Griffin 2015). Pichai's performance has captured the hearts of many not only the employees but also the stockholders, leading to performance reward in 2016 (Lesiv et al. 2018). Never the less, a different scenario on Ballmer's control performance has led to the dissatisfaction of most of the stockholders (Johnston 2010). Wo9rking towards a competitive company, managers, should always ensure keen performance evaluation of their employees as well as efficiency and reliability. Adequately meeting the ultimate goal is paramount in any organization. Experience, communication skills, organization, time management as well as reliability should be a pack in every manager's docket. Confidence, respect for employees and delegation should go hand in hand in making a manager more effective in his or her career. Controlling while maintaining and improving performance to achieve an organizational goal is what has taken Google deeper into achieving its goals. Control can be measured in three major steps which include; input stage, conversion stage, and output stage. All these stages must be well tackled to achieve a company's goal.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Pichai's performance in the organisation is beyond doubt as he demonstrates the proper use of the four leadership aspects that have driven Google to a more successive side of the debate. On the other hand, due to Ballmer's implementation of the four elements poorly, which has resulted in Bing trailing in the market stock. It should be noted that management skills can logically extend from experience all the way to skills developed in various positions in an organization. This, therefore, indicates the essence of formal training and education in the organization. To have a mentor at the place of work as well as having a close relationship with a professional can develop good and artistic skills needed for management roles. Most positions in a company are given or tasked with one specific duty based on a particular knowledge, need of the company, but good managers are supposed to have a wide spectrum of knowledge to enable them to navigate various structural, interpersonal as well as procedural challenges in a company.
