The lesson aims to enable the students to understand the use of technological in the study of history and how they can make use of the concept of digital citizenship to learn better. In that respect, it will need the following:
Laptop computers (for easy maneuverability because students will share).
An internet connection.
At the end of the class, students will have done the following:
Learned how to use online academic sites.
Learned how to use Google Drive and the cloud, in general, to store, retrieve, and share data.
Standards to Be Met
The lesson will be planned in accordance with the following International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE):
Digital Citizen.
The students will be expected to cultivate and manage their digital identity and reputation and make sure that they are aware of the permanence of their actions in the
digital world. (ISTE 2016).
Innovative designer
The learners are supposed to use the online sites and the Google services to increase the aesthetic and functional value of the information they share and use on the internet. These standards will be aimed at helping the students to "learn how to use a deliberate design process for generating ideas, testing theories, creating innovative artifacts or solving authentic problems. (ISTE, 2016).
Teaching
The teaching process will be facilitated through a combined use of YouTube tutorials and teacher-guided engagement between the students and the technologies that they are being introduced to. The first of these videos will be "Beginner's Guide to Google Drive for Windows," and this will take about 25 minutes of the class. The video is 17 minutes long, and the teacher will play it and explain concepts at various points throughout the video.
Second, the teacher will go to the site Learnoutloud.com and help the students to find information by demonstrating how to run searches and access audio books for middle school ("Free Audio Books," 2016). Ultimately, the research and study skills of the middle schoolers should improve very much from this exercise. The site provides detailed information, mostly through audio and pdf files of books across all subjects from kindergarten through the twelfth grade and makes it easy for a student to read long passages of information because of its audio feature ("Free Audio Books," 2016).
Assessing for Understanding
Ideally, to gauge the understanding of the students, the teacher will carry out the following exercises:
The students will be put in pairs on a computer.
Each of them will be allowed to access a Google Drive account and retrieve class-related information from it.
The student will then be required to share the information with another student on another account.
Lastly, they will be asked to access Learnoutloud.com and access a historical work.
The teacher will make sure to open accounts for the learners at the end of the class to help them grow conversant with the technologies taught in class.
Closure
The teacher will discuss open questions with the students, who will be able to understand basics better at the end of the process.
The teacher will engage the students with the following questions:
What is the basic plan for a perfect presentation?
What is the use of presentations, and why are they so important in helping us learn?
How do you plan to use the information you have learned in class today?
