Introduction
The lens essay "Heat, work, and genre" by J.A Lindstrom review film theory about the role of work, both illegal and legitimate in the film "Heat" by Michael Mann. The author of the article describes the filmmaker Michael man as an equal auteur of slickness and style with a talent for capturing the moment's ethos and fashion ("Heat, Work And Genre - J.A. Lindstrom"). The film Heat focuses on style and personality. The film is about work and its increasing personnel costs. The film provides an overview of the effects of work on people's daily lives. In the film, the characters feel a sense of excitement and challenge while working ("Heat, Work And Genre - J.A. Lindstrom"). However, the work ultimately excludes them from any emotional life outside of the demands of the job. Their lives revolve around the work they do and have little or no time at all to interact with the outside world. This leads to them living a secluded life, lacking interaction with other people in society. A film can be utilized by filmmakers to educate society on various aspects of life. For instance, a film can be used to educate society on the role of work both positive and negative on our daily life as in the case of the film Heat. A number of other films have been used to display and reflect on the role of work in the society, an example is Bay Driver. The film Baby Driver is a car-chase thriller musical by Edgar Wright. The film provides a reflection of work and its impacts on society.
The film Baby Driver is a 2017 musical which is disguised as a car-chase thriller which combines pop static sensibilities with over-cracked action fantasies ("Baby Driver (2017)"). The film inspirations came from among others the film Heat. The plot of the film follows Baby a character played by Ansel Elgort a music lover who is forced to work as a getaway driver for a criminal kingpin Doc played by Kevin Spacey. Other star characters in the film include; Jamie Foxx, Jon Bernthal, Eiza Gonzalez, Flea and Jon Hamm as criminals who work for Doc ("Baby Driver (2017)"). Baby is always one job away from freedom as is finds himself indebted to Doc. Baby takes care of his foster father back home who listens to music with his fingertips. Baby's father has influenced his love for music and singing and lip-reading. At work, Baby is surrounded by wild cards, criminals who have all sorts of ideas about life ("Baby Driver (2017)"). Baby whom falls in love with Debora a waitress has to jungle between life at work and his personal life
Conclusion
The film Baby Driver indirectly addresses questions of the relation between one's work, commitment to a profession and quality of life. Baby's personal life is influenced negatively by his work commitment. He falls in love with Debra but his criminal life, a life that he did not choose results to the separation of the two. Baby's personality is clearly seen by the number of people he has either saved or helped during various robberies come to testify for him during his trial. Work is responsible for influencing a person's life and of those around either positively or negatively. The quality of life of individuals can be influenced by a commitment to the profession as seen in the case of the baby who has to serve time in jail for being involved with criminals though involuntarily. In conclusion, we can learn from the lens that the society is influenced by work both illegal and legitimate.
