I am writing to you to put across my choice for The Person of the Decade. In my opinion, George W. Bush should fly that flag due to his remarkable contribution to the dissolution of the Soviet Union by early 1990s. George Herbert Walker Bush was the 41st president of the United States between 1989 and 1993 and also had been the 43rd vice president between 1981 and 1989 under President Reagan. It is during his regime as the president that the Soviet Union was finally dissolved and significant agreements made between him and the Soviet Secretary General Mikhail Gorbachev, to the interests of the United States and its people.

George Bushs record during his time in office demonstrates an immense contribution to the wellbeing of the American population, and this explains why he deserves the recognition. After he had been sworn in as president, his administration experienced a lot of pressure to meet up with the Soviets in a bid to discuss peaceful relations between them. Though some of the government officials, including General Brent and Condoleezza Rice, were apprehensive about the meeting, fearing that it could be premature and likely to send suspicious signals to the Soviet, Bush made the wise decision and met up with Gorbachev on December 2nd and 3rd 1989. Although there were no agreements signed, this meeting was a huge milestone and a step to the end of the Cold War.

President Bush continued his efforts for a better America, and he held another summit with Gorbachev in July 1991. This meeting led to the signing of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START 1) in Moscow. This was the first major arms agreement since the signing of the Intermediate Ranged Nuclear Forces Treaty signed by Reagan and Gorbachev in 1987. The contentions in START would reduce the strategic nuclear weapons of the United States and the USSR by about 35% over seven years that followed, and the Soviet Unions land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles would be cut by 50%. This was an incredible deal that would witness peaceful coexistence between these two nationals. It was, in fact, a significant step towards dispelling a half a century of mistrust. It is in this spirit that President Bush and Gorbachev declared a U.S Russian strategic partnership after the dissolution of the USSR in 1991, marking the end of the Cold War.

The Bush presidency was marked by achievements in foreign affairs and some notable domestic successes such as the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Clean Air Act Amendments. He also pioneered in the war against Iraqs terrorist leader Saddam Hussein, who had attacked Kuwait and wanted to overtake and rule the country. Bushs efforts were geared towards returning the control of Kuwait to the Kuwaiti government and to protect Americas interests abroad. His goal was to realize an era freer from the threat of terror and stronger in the pursuit of justice.

Although some critics have questioned his considered failures in successfully administering domestic affairs, the significant impact his administration had, and especially the role he played in the dissolution of the Soviet Union, cannot go unnoticed. He contributed to making changes in the culture and politics of America. This is why I still hold onto the claim that he should be nominated the person of the decade by all means.
