The administration of IM is a regular nursing intervention that is widely employed in the clinical practice. For this reason, the importance of having an ideal IM methodology should not be understated. This is also because some of the potential complications as a result of bad IM injections could result in the occurrence of abscess, tissue necrosis, muscle fibrosis, cellulites, and contractures hematoma (Velissaris et al., 2009). Erroneous IM can also result in the injury of a persons peripheral nerves, bones as well as the blood vessels.

This essay is focused on a learning need that I require developing as a competency at this stage of my nursing degree. As the primary reason of this essay, I have decided to lay focus on the determination of the safest methods of IM administration as my nursing clinical learning need. My rationale for taking this field of focus is based on an experience that I had when I was on an internship at the local public hospital in the Department of Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). After administering IM to a mentally ill patient while under supervision, I realized that I would like to have substantial knowledge as well as competence in performing the procedure effectively. My aim is to improve my performance and skill in IM administration from average to perfect.
