Specific Purpose: To inform the audience how consuming dark chocolate has several pros and cons.
Thesis: Small amounts of chocolate in your daily diet will decrease health problems, and too much will give an adverse effect.
Introduction
Attention Material: Have you ever seen a five-pound chocolate bar? I was able to receive a bar of chocolate from Willy Wonka yesterday in a coin toss.
Orienting Material: According to The Candy Store online, "Milk chocolate accounts for 80% of all the chocolate Americans consume on a daily basis."
A. Tie to Audience Clearly, milk chocolate is the most popular option, but what about dark chocolate?
B. Credibility Statement: I believe I am fully qualified to discuss the topic of dark chocolate because I have researched the information for the last week, and I think I have sampled every kind of chocolate bar made.
C. Thesis Statement: Today, I will discuss the positive and negative qualities of dark chocolate
D. Preview: everything has positive and negative effects, and dark chocolate is no option.
(Transition) First, let's take a look at the health benefits.
Body
I. Main Point 1: Dark chocolate is a good source of antioxidants. Scientists reveal that people who consumed approximately 3.5 ounces of dark chocolate have minimal cases of heart (BMJ, 2015).
A. Dark chocolate contains Cocoa that is rich in a chemical called flavanols. Recent studies, it has shown the cocoa flavanols have some benefits.
- Flavanol help improves cardiovascular health.
- The dark chocolate also reduced inflammation and elevated blood pressure.
- It also helps reduce blood pressure
(Transition) We just discussed the positive characteristics of dark chocolate, let's examine the negative ones
II Main Point 2: although Dark Chocolate has some benefits, it also has adverse effects as it contains the highly addictive substance called "sugar." and has high calories
A. All dark chocolate is high in calories with an average of (150-170 calories per bar), and weight gain will occur if it is eaten in abundance according to the Harvard School of Public Health (Harvard, 2018).
B. Sugar is a carbohydrate, and our bodies need it for energy.
However, an excessive amount of intake of sugar can adversely affect one's health. Those of you who have diabetes, you should already be aware that dark chocolate can cause your blood sugar to spike.
- Chocolate also contains caffeine, the same amount as a cup of coffee, Caffeine is acidic and often can lead to stomach problems.
- The way chocolate is produced, it is high in saturated fat. Manufactures often reduce the saturated fat, and replace it with carbohydrates from sugars.
- If that does not detour you, then this might, chocolate contains a toxic metal named cadmium. Which cadmium is harmful if you ingest too much of it.
- In a 2017 survey, researchers found that almost every brand of dark chocolate contained more cadmium than the World Health organizations recommends (WHO, 2016).
(Transition) We have covered both the positive and negative qualities of dark chocolate, and good judgment is the best way to avoid the dangers.
Conclusion
The signal of End: In conclusion, as with most things, there is a positive and a negative side to everything including dark chocolate
Summary: Dark chocolate has health benefits such as flavanols and antioxidants that contribute to heart health, low blood pressure and therefore are right for once health. However, there's a downside that includes sugar, caffeine which can cause detrimental effects to one's health.
There are pros and cons to everything in life. Making the best choice of consuming dark chocolate is only in moderations. Be cautious of the type of chocolate you devour, not all chocolates are made the same way, and some have a lot more sugars.
III. Restate Thesis: Devouring chocolate has its advantage and disadvantage. Advantage it help enhance one's heart, however, eating excessive amounts can lead to adverse health results.
IV. The clincher: we all are now better informed about chocolates and even though we can barely say no to a bit of chocolate be advised of possible risks. Just in case, if I am not seen again, you will know that Wonka's gang has something to do with it.
