Volunteer Experience Influence on Future

Nurses are required to maintain population health through skills that promote emotional, psychological, and physical health. Besides, nursing education improves one's social competence which was essential in communicating with the homeless people in Phoenix Rescue Mission and educate them on the importance of maintaining a proper diet, physical hygiene, diabetes management strategies and reproductive hygiene amongst women at the rescue center. As such, in the future nursing program knowledge and competencies will play a significant role in all the rescue center activities which are geared towards improving the overall healthcare outcomes of the people at the center. In the future, the skills and knowledge acquired as well as the practical exercising of my nursing competencies in the rescue center will be instrumental in maintain and promoting and maintaining community health (Valesky, 2011).

Grand Canyon University as an educational institution, provides a unique environment where one can be nurtured mentally, physically and spiritually through the different programs that are geared towards ensuring holistic growth and development to serve the community. As a Christian institution, the institution inspires nurses and students in other faculties to be of service to the community and humanity (Rumun, 2014). As an individual, I am extremely inspired by the institution administration ability to offer assistance whenever needed as well as the ability of the chapel to guide every student towards becoming a better version of themselves.

In Grand Canyon, the experience has been one of a kind due to the great people with exceptional personality and Christian values (Rumun, 2014). The chapel minister in Grand Canyon played an instrumental role in the overall experience while acquiring nursing skills. The chapel minister inspired purpose and direction in my acquisition of nursing skills which inspired my desire to volunteer in Phoenix Rescue Mission where I provided instrumental health education which will go a long way in maintaining and improving the health of the homeless people in the rescue mission. Extracurricular activities sponsored by the school provided an environment where I could develop my talent as well as socialize with students from different areas in the United States, which was key in developing my professional network.

Community service was one of the most appealing and life-changing events in Grand Canyon, a Christian university with ideals aimed at serving humanity. My community service was volunteer work in Phoenix Rescue Mission which changed my perception of the needy and the homeless and has further driven my intention and desire to offer my knowledge and competency in nursing towards improving the lives of the needy in the future. The skills from Grand Canyon promotes a holistic approach to skills acquisition and development, which is instrumental in holistic professional development.

Team Work and Collaboration

During my volunteer, the spirit of teamwork was instrumental in the accomplishment of all the activities in Phoenix Rescue Mission, which was instrumental in improving the lives of the people in the rescue center. One of the significant lesson derived from my volunteer in service to the homeless people in Phoenix was that teamwork helps to achieve what an individual cannot and improves the overall judgment quality and outcomes of decisions (Babiker et al., 2014). During our volunteer activities in Phoenix Rescue Mission team work helped to ensure that the different planned activities in terms of health education were successful. Working in teams was essential in promoting cross group learning and furthering of skills and also helped individual nurses who were volunteering to complement their competencies and knowledge (Babiker et al., 2014). The collaboration between team members in providing healthcare services to the homeless people helped to close the skills gaps and promote learning which was instrumental in the acquisition of practical nursing experience and skills which will be instrumental in every member future nursing practice. My volunteer experience inculcated the spirit and culture of teamwork in all my future practice as a nurse. In the future, I believe that the social and communication skills acquired by communicating with the team members and the homeless people at the rescue center will be instrumental in ensuring that my future professional interactions with nurses and the community members will be informed by reason and professionalism.
