Introduction
In the past, most businesses knew natural calamities as the only disaster that could affect them; today, system breakdown and related technological failures, power outage, theft, and fire accidents are prime areas of concern when it comes to disastrous events facing organizations. Every organization needs to have an insurance cover and a disaster management plan to ensure its continuity in the event of risk, the safety of the workers and, to provide quick recovery from the threats in question. In this paper, I have discussed how Simonston Hospital can use a disaster preparedness plan to solve the problems its employees are going through due to the prevailing ice storm.
Although the hospital management does not have a legal obligation to ensure the security of workers outside the hospital, it is ethical for the hospital to try to help the workers and their families. Therefore, the hospital should have a disaster management plan then prepares the staff for future ice storms, educates them of safety measures to take during the storm, seeks to find a solution to the seasonal lack of safe habitat and an appropriate recovery strategy.
The Planning Process
First of all, the hospital should research to identify the most affected members of staff and come up with an estimated budget required to accommodate them and their children until the storm ends. Secondly, an accommodation plan should be initiated to ensure that the staff gets food and conducive temporary housing free from carbon monoxide poisoning by heating, which is common during winter and has adverse health implications including death ("Risk for Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Increases in Winter," 2017). The most appropriate place to house the workers and their families would be in the staff quarters within the organization so that they can regularly check on their children after work, and so that they work during their shifts without extending time. The organization should then find a way to relocate the staff to the hospital because some can do it on their own, considering that most roads will be blocked by ice. Finally, the hospital should devise long-lasting ways to help its staff in case of another possible storm in the future, and also teach the staff on how to prepare for it. It it important to incorporate an emergency management plan, that in this case, gives the employees the first priority so that they can continue offering uninterrupted sevices to the hospital. The emergency management plan should also assure protection for the affected families, and disaster recovery for smooth running of the institution.
Execution of the Plan
The hospital should take the appropriate measures to ensure the safety of workers and to eliminate chances of losing any staff member to resignation or transfer. Adequate funds should be set aside to finance the whole process and to cater to the staff until the storm ends, roads are cleared, and electricity has been restored. The process should also take the shortest time possible because the storm can affect transportation systems and even lead to new crises such as water utility disruptions, telephone services outage and lack of emergency support (Call, 2010).
Conclusion
When the storm is over, the hospital should find ways to deal with such a problem in the future, for instance, by building new houses in the staff quarters. The current risk and disaster management plan should also be updated regularly to cover more possible calamities and increase its efficiency at a reduced cost.
