This paper compares two products (in terms of packaging bottles designs) from two established shaving oil/cream companies. The two companies here are the Gillette and American Crew Companies. The two branded products under comparison herein are the American Crew Ultra-Gliding Shave Oil and Gillettes Fusion Pro-Glide Sensitive 2-in-1
As we can see from the images above, these two companies have got totally different packaging techniques.
The American Crew Ultra-Gliding Shave Oil bottle is designed in the shape of a small cylinder with smoothly flowing edges at the cylinder ends (both top and bottom). The material used for the manufacture of this bottle is synthetic plastic that is opaque, with a merely rough surface, so as to increase friction for an easy grip. The bottle has been designed to accommodate fluid capacity of 50ml; however, there are other bottles designed in different sizes and capacity, such as 25ml, 75ml, and 100ml among other sizes. The business brand name is well written on the surface with a different visible color, which must be distinguishable from the bottles uniform color for easy reading (i.e. the bottle is designed of a uniform color, though the company uses different dull colors). Bottle top is designed of black, which is a different color from that of the bottle. It is made of vertically parallel creases, which are meant to increase the grip during opening and closing of the bottle. The bottle is a non-pump bottle.
On the other hand, Gillettes Fusion Pro-Glide Sensitive 2-in-1 Shave bottle is equally designed in cylindrical shape, but with sharp bottom corner end, and smoothly ending top toward the lid. The bottle is designed and made of thin aluminium sheet. The first Gillette bottle in the above mage is made of a uniformly smooth cylindrical shape, while the second bottle is merely short but with contours towards the top end. The material surface is quite smooth, with different color decorations and brand name plus a few writings detailing the information about the product. Most of Gillette bottles are pump topped bottles as shown. Gillettes Fusion Pro-Glide Sensitive 2-in-1 Shave bottles also come in different capacities such as 25ml, 50ml, 75ml, and 100ml among other sizes.
However, the only similarity in these bottles is that both of the designs assumes the general cylindrical shapes. As well, both of the bottle designs portray the products information and brand name around the cylindrical shape. Both of the bottle designs are made of sustainable materials that are safe for packaging, storage and transportation to the target market, which is majorly composed of men and some few female customers.
My shaving oil bottles design for the Hugo Boss Company will share a number of similar design features as the abovementioned two bands, including cylindrical shape with smooth endings, varying capacities, and portrayal of the brand name on the bottles surface. My design material will be synthetic plastic. However, my bottle design will borrow much feature from the Gillette product, such as the use of different bright colors that are attractive and use of pump top. The brand name Hugo Boss Shaving Oil will appear on the surface, and relevant decorations. Similarly, the size of the bottles designed for Hugo Boss will vary in sizes from 25ml, 50ml, 75ml, 100ml, 125ml and other bigger bottle sizes. The bottles will be used for packaging and safe storage of Hugo Boss Shaving oil products.
