The first impression always matters when it comes to any profession; especially for the nursing professional that entails a lot of commitment and self-sacrifice. As a member of the medical practitioners in the institution, I take responsibility for failing to notify the faculty at CCAC Boyce Nursing School of my clinical preceptorship schedule by Sunday at 11 a.m. The failure also included not notifying on any changes in the program at UPMC East 5th floor Med Surgical Unit. It was an unprofessional act which I hope to avoid in future. I do respect the nursing profession, and I feel that I have disrespected its ethics by my conduct.

According to Rhodes et.al (2012) the nursing profession can be dated back to the time Florence Nightingale nursed the war soldiers. Professionalism in any profession can be described as acting as per the expected conducts and ethics in a profession such that a person exhibits honesty, courtesy, and also respect when dealing with colleagues and clients. A medical professional is expected to adhere to the expected duties, follow the rules and set an example for others when it comes to performing tasks (Rhodes et.al 2012).

In regards to professionalism in nursing, nurses are expected to stick to certain values that tend to be universal when it comes to the medical field. They include; being honest, responsible, the value of human dignity, alleviating suffering, pursuing knowledge and also promoting equality when it comes to associating with colleagues and patients (Rhodes et.al 2012). In other words, the sole purpose of the nursing professional is to help the sick people and try as much to prevent and reduce any form of suffering.

It is the duty of every nurse to take responsibility for the laid out tasks and understand what is expected from their profession (Cho & Bang, 2013). Furthermore, for one to be successful in the profession, he or she has to have discipline and have both indoor and outdoor exposure when it comes to their day to day activities. It is worth noting that nurses tend to be judged by their appearance, how they behave and also how they present themselves. Also, nurses are expected to be orderly and abide by the schedule presented in their place of work. The profession entails sacrifice such that the profession and the needs of the patients come first when delivering their services (Cho & Bang, 2013).

As part of my remediation plan, I would like to request for another opportunity and at a time convenient for the faculty in order to prevent any interference with planned out schedules. Responsibility is among the main duties of a nurse whereby each person is expected to be in charge of any duty accorded to him or her. In the case of any changes in duties and programs, as a professional, a nurse is expected to notify the involved parties earlier for them to make changes in their schedules. In regards to my misconduct of failing to notify the faculty at CCAC Boyce Nursing School of my clinical preceptorship schedule by Sunday at 11 a.m. I take responsibility for my action and request for an apology. It was not professional to me as I interfered with the schedule of the associated members of the faculty and any other affected party. The act was unintentional because of a family emergency, but I do take responsibility for the lack of notification. I have learned that I should make earlier notifications if I will be unable to meet up to my duties in time to prevent being an inconvenience to other people.

Having a guide would also be of much help during my preceptorship. A guide will act as a mentor in guiding me on my professional duties such that I will be able to break any rules and abide by the institution policies. I am quite new in the profession and hence look forward in making my practice as effective as possible. By getting support, I will be well acquainted with my duties, get an exposure me on how to deal with my fellow professions and patients in addition to receiving immediate feedback on my progress and in the case of corrections.

Another important part of the remediation plan is having a personal plan such that I am able to balance my personal and professional responsibilities. As stated earlier, the nursing profession requires commitment and self-sacrifice; aspects that I am willing to express in my profession. A personal plan will be able to prevent cases such as my misconduct from happening.

As a nurse, I am expected to abide by my professional duties and hence hope that the remediation plan will be taken into consideration. I humbly apologize for my misconduct, and I hope that by having a session that fits the schedule of the associated faculty, having a mentor and also having a plan that will prevent any issues from interfering with my professional needs will be effective in my remediation plan. I purpose to be the best in my duties during the preceptorship and display professionalism at its best.
