Introduction and Background of the Case
The top leaders working at smartphones, portable music, and tablet computers discussed the different achievements they have made while on retreat. The accomplishments include making people more happy, productive, and smarter as users can easily access information. Even with these achievements, electronic devices have resulted in more accidents and deaths.
Description/Summary of the Case Study
While leaders working in an electronic devices company were on a retreat, they discussed the benefits and limitations their products have brought to the users. The benefits include making individuals more smart, productive, and happier, easy use of the internet, and the creation of job opportunities. However, the devices have facilitated deaths and accidents in most families. In the beginning, making, and receiving calls is what led to accidents but currently surfing, and texting have resulted in more accidents. The aspects of leadership in the case include honesty, integrity, courage, and focused (Gujral, 2012).
Questions That Related to the Case Study
Question One
The industry should encourage people to complete calls or texts before starting the car (Basacik et al., 2011).
Question 2
Derek should not be released from his position since he pointed out a significant concern that affects people globally. He can be described as a courageous, honest, and transparent leader (Gilber & Munroe, 2012).
Question 3
The opinion of Olivia and Raphael are ethically right since they pointed out the benefits of electronic devices to society. However, their views are not socially responsible as they did not consider the adverse effects of the devices on the community (Yan & IGI Global, 2015).
Lesson Learned
Through the case study, I have learned that leaders have different qualities. For instance, Olivia and Raphael are loyal to the organization, and that is the reason they only consider the benefits of electronic devices (Pringle, 2007). However, Derek is a sincere leader as he acknowledges that although the electronic products have helped in different ways, they have caused accidents and deaths.
The Significance of the Case Study to Leadership Ethics & Social Responsibility
The case study is essential in leadership ethics and social responsibility as it encourages leaders to always stand for what is ethically right. Additionally, effective leaders should be socially responsible by doing the right thing and make it pay.
Conclusion and Recommendation
In summary, although smartphones have many benefits to human beings, they are the leading cause of accidents on the roads. The reason is that it distracts and changes the driver's behavior (Stewart, 2015). Therefore, drivers should not use their phones while driving to reduce deaths and accidents on roads.
