Introduction
Pursuing a career that I enjoy being involved in, one in which I can actively influence the society positively while earning profitably has always been among the major things that I have wanted to achieve. Seth Godin, in his book, Linchpin: Are You Indispensable? describes art as an act of courage, where one's action influences change and action in other individuals (Godin, 2010) I'd want to be an artist and serve the community as I pursue my career. Even so, the journey to being a production manager has not been without influence from economic, social, and cultural factors. Technological developments and advancements have also shaped my education pursuits and career opportunities. Decision making has also been a crucial aspect that has been tested time and again in my experiences. However, I strive to remain true to the course of being a productive member of society and a role model for those in pursuit of the same. In this paper, I discuss the factors that have influenced my career choice and how I have accommodated them.
The economy is an important factor that affects every individual in the face of the world. The price of goods and services, job opportunities and, hence, resources, the price of doing business, living arrangements are some of the factors affected by the economy of a country (Cohn, 2016). The quality of goods and services that individuals receive are affected by an economy. The affordability of these goods and services is clearly dictated by the resources of individuals have. One may find that these goods are graded according to quality which also determines their prices. I strongly felt that the quality of a product should not be compromised for the sake of the price of the goods. If the product is not good enough, why should it be in the market? The emergence of counterfeit goods and substandard ones was an aspect that disturbed me a lot. The society should not have to face such fraud and felt strongly compelled to find a solution to this subject. This guided me to pursue production management where I would advocate for quality products that are up to standard.
As a production manager, there are various qualities that colleagues and employers expect one to have. For instance, one is expected to understand user needs and business opportunities (Alchian, & Demsetz, 1972). I have always had an interest in looking for problems that people experience in a society and try to find solutions and try to identify products that would solve these problems or needs in society. By putting the customer as the priority, I am able to find the motivation to supervise the manufacturing such products. One should also have an eye for product design to prosper in this field. With the constantly evolving society, products to have been among the products that have experienced a change in design and structure. Taking an example of the car, their design has drastically changed over the last four to five decades. Those companies which have been able to keep up with this evolution, for example, Ford, have been able to remain in the market up to this far. The other qualities include being influential and having an innovative mindset. All these qualities have helped me in the pursuit of my career.
As I continue to add to my knowledge in production management and shift to other environments of work, I will strive to pursue the improvement of production and production of quality products. Godin describes art as an individual act of bravery (Godin, 2010). I take my pursuit of knowledge in production management as an art.
