The overall purpose of this Essay of Hiren Mistry is to persuade the Canadian educator's Canadian teachers should at all cost try to foster cultural intelligence in their students. They educators should also embrace a pluralist pedagogy among the students that will enable these learners to prepare in engaging a multicultural world that is in existence beyond walls of the classroom. The intent is to inform and persuade the Canadian educators to consider their stand of advocating assimilation in schools instead of pluralism. Reporting and persuasion come in hand through her conclusion when she tells them that in a society where multiculturalism has taken a toll, assimilation is no longer practical. Hiren Mistry essay primarily is presented by a combination of opinion based and factual information. The factual information she represents is apparent when she points out the cultural composition of Canada. She gives the following statistics, (Mistry 2013)
"If a casual look at a typical urban classroom won't silence doubters, then the 2001 Canadian census stats would quickly put any doubts to rest. In the 1990s, 73% of all new immigrants settled in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal, of which nearly 77% were of South Asian, African, South American and Chinese descent. More significantly, immigrants from these regions grew by over 24% from 1991 to 2001 all across Canada, and there is no sign that this is a receding trend."
While opinion based, Mistry (2013) claims,
"The choice is clear. If Canadian educators take the challenge seriously to foster the cultural intelligence' of their students and adopt a pluralist pedagogy to prepare them to engage the multicultural world beyond their classroom walls, Canada can proudly live up to its reputation for being a global model of multiculturalism."

The two paradigm in Hiren Mistry's essay are;
Assimilation; the paradigm that advocates a collective Canadian identity, national heritage, and values in schools regardless where a certain student emigrates from.
Pluralism; this paradigm advocate for an envision atmosphere where there is the existence of global connections amongst Canadian students that revolve around through integration in all aspects of extracurricular and curricular school life.
Mistry mentions a belief carried by assimilationists-specifically that cultural diversity may end up ghettoizing Canadas high schools. What does ghettoization mean, and what consequences would ghettoization have on Canadian students?
Hiren Mistry uses the word ghettoization meaning that process where the minority are treated in the differently, or they are forced out of the conventional either culturally or physically. The consequences of ghettoization include; Canadian students may turn out to be racist, prone to gangs that may instigate violence and self-interested in their stuff.
Why does Mistry believe that assimilation is no longer a viable option?
Mistry believes that an assimilation is a viable option simply because arguments for assimilation are only founded on the fear of change that lingers on the loss of cultural subjugation and naive consideration of culture.
What does Mistry believe are the consequences of not adopting pluralism within Canadian schools? Explain your answer.
Mistry (2013) claims that, The consequences for not engaging in this bold, yet practical experiment are manifold. If Canadian schools continue to respond to the presence of diversity through assimilation, they will see their worst fears come true. Students who do not see their world views recognized in their school environment will seek other ways, outside of the school environment, to reinforce their personal and cultural integrity. If they cannot adopt pluralism within Canadian schools.
