Introduction
One of the main social problems is immigration. However, it is important to note that immigrant has a positive contribution as it benefits the economy, companies, help in improving diversity. immigration however negatively affect the country more than it positively does.
Immigration has contributed significantly to demographic shifts in society with more dependent people in the country than before. Most of the people who come to the United States come with their young families who are all dependent students. Immigration has significantly increased the population of the country. The population exploitation puts a lot of pressure to the few resources and social amenities (Eitzen, Baca Zinn & Eitzen, 1996, p. 115 Most of the states have registered high levels of crimes and poverty because unemployment has risen. The few jobs that were previously available have been taken by the immigrants who can accept the jobs with the meager pay (Eitzen, BacaZinn & Eitzen, 1996, p. 116). The immigrants cannot bargain effectively for higher pay and that is why there are prefeed by the corporations. Apart from the job, immigrants have increased the level of insecurity with most criminals being illegal immigrants. From high crimes rates to racism. In various states, immigrants are attacked by racist American and some migrants retaliate when attack and the vicious circle increases. Additionally, insecurity in the country is also attributed to the immigrants especially the undocumented immigrants.
Causes of the Social Problem
Immigration is a social problem caused by the movement of people to the united states. Immigrants are either documented and undocumented the undocumented immigrants are in America legally while the undocumented immigrants are in America illegally without proper documentation (Eitzen, BacaZinn & Eitzen, 1996, p. 117). Immigrants move to American and they can be Ut into four distinct categories. There are family class immigrants who moved to America to lobe with their relatives who are residents currently living in the united states.
There are also economic migrants who moved to American to work or do business. these include skilled workers who seek employment and greener pastures of business people who went to America to expand them busies or start a business with the profit motives. The third category of immigrants is those who seek refuge and asylum. Refugees are the people who come to American to escape persecution, tortures and other forms of violence in their country. The final groups of immigrants in American include the humanitarian and students who come to American as humanitarian actors or as students to study courses not provided in their country. Immigrants cause pressure on resources and take over jobs.
Recommended Policies, Programs, and Frameworks
Over the last five years, policy debates over the rise in the number of global refugees have been a major activity. with the wave of their nationalists' electoral victories, natives do not like migrants irrespective of the status. The main argument is the loss of jobs and the pressure on resources. Racist attacks have been common and the only way to prevent these occurrences is to control refugee's crisis and manage immigrants (Kolb, 2010). The policy recommendation, programs, and frameworks are some of the key strategies that can be used to effectively manage immigration problems. Thus, way the effects of immigration will be controlled and the number of immigrants that should be allowed into the country can be determined
Policies
The government should design temporary migration programs aimed at filling the critical labor demands and minimize the immigrant's risk of overstaying. For example, VISA should be temporarily given in response to labor demands (Kolb, 2010).
Immigrants should only be limited to depositary activities. Any activity or association that would lead to overstays should be avoided such as marriage because most of the marriage between immigrants and natives are sham marriages for citizenship acquisitions.
There should be legal pathways for migration to help in curbing irregular migration. For example, stating the maximum duration that an immigrant can stay in a country can help in reducing immigration (Clemens, Graham, Gough & Huang, 2018).
There should also be strict rules for immigrant's documentation. All undaunted immigrant who has stayed in American for more than 10 years should be allowed to stay in America and be legally documented to work, live and thrive in America. The policy should not be viewed as a ploy to reward lawbreakers.
Policies that allow immigrants to contribute to the economy should be implemented. The immigrants have a fiscal impact and they have the potential to contribute beyond their individual level taxes (Kolb, 2010). For example, allowing immigrant investors and entrepreneurs or innovators can help in promoting economic development. Therefore, policies that lower or eliminate the barriers to the businesses should be revised.
Finally, skilled migrants should be incentivized to migrate to America especially in an area where there are skills gaps (Rosenkoetter & Nardi, 2007). The government should, therefore, develop policies aimed at attracting and retaining the skilled migrants in the country until there are adequate native skilled workforces.
Programs
While immigrants are a major problem for the American population. There are a lot of benefits that can accrue from the immigrant population in the country. Therefore, instead of sending the immigrants back to their home country, the government should formulate programs that will see them fed, clothed, housed and trained to occupy specific jobs. The cost of repatriating an immigrant is quite high. Therefore, the government can avoid incurring the costs by training and developing those who are already in the United States and employing them to contribute to economic development (Marshall, 2009).
To overcome the problem of racism, the government should amend anti-discrimination laws and pronounce strict measures for racisms American. America is a land of liberty where everyone should live freely without disclination or stereotyping or racism. Those who perpetrate racism should be arrested and punished for their insensitivity.
The main issues why Americans fear or hate immigrants stems from the argument or perception that the immigrants take jobs and occupy offices that should be occupied by the Americans. There should be transparency in the hiring processes. Employment should base on merit to allow the immigrants and native Americans to compete for the same positions equally. Structures for ensuring that there is equality between the Americans and the immigrants should be put in place not only to favor immigrants but also to help American improve their employability.
Framework
There should be a framework for comprehensive reform in immigration. For one, there are already evidences that immigrants contribute to the country's prosperity. There should be strategies aimed at taping immigrant skills and talents. Additionally, there should be a framework for creating order and legality in migration. The immigration systems are broken with a lot of illegality and roadside decision made by the president and other special interest groups. There should be a clear legal framework for improving immigrants' experiences in the country (Marshall, 2009).
Section Conclusion and Direction for Future Studies
Immigration is one of the main social problems facing America today. With the influx of illegal immigrant and legal immigrants, the Americans have all the right to fight immigrants. but then, America is a country of immigrant which means that everyone should be free to move to America within the confines of the law. The American economy has also developed and become completely dependent on immigrant labor. a larger percentage of the American workforce growth since early 1980 can be attributed to the immigration and this is the same trend that will continue over the next two to three decades. Immigration is only a social problem for rigid individuals who do not see a change in basic assumptions in society. Instead of viewing immigration as a problem because the immigration systems are broken. Immigration is not social problems per see because structural changes, framework, reforms, and policies can be developed to help the country benefit from immigration. The right strategy is to find the right mix of immigrant and American population that can produce the optimal output. Diversity is important in the society and the presence of the immigrants in American contribute to the diversity of the society and increases the pool of skilled workforce. Immigrants contribute innocently to the country's economic health, national unity, and social stability. Future studies should be aimed at developing an employment-based immigration policy and an economic framework for integrating immigrants and American for social benefits.
