Introduction

Every year in Korea, a movie or drama that deals with human trafficking releases and it always makes a successful run. The reason why the media constantly take an approach to this heavy subject would be because of the endless occurrence of human trafficking. Human trafficking is the "world's fastest growing crime" (Brinlee) that occurs in most countries, regardless of the location whether victims are caught in their own country or the overseas. The seriousness of the trafficking can be proved by an Equality Now fact sheet, where it shows that the sex trafficking industry makes an estimated $99 billion a year. This huge number shows how human trafficking is a big industry that is regularly and easily done and has continued to be part of humans without their notice. Within the increase rate of human trafficking each year, it should be noticed that the human trafficking is a serious violence all over the world that needs to be prevented, protected and prosecuted with the attention from many people and the support from the government because it is not the problem that individuals can solve by themselves. Before getting the best way to stop human trafficking, protecting and supporting the survivors would be the most important thing to do and preventing the accident by getting people to be educated with this topic would be important as well.

Human trafficking is a common term but has different definitions. According to United Nation, human trafficking is the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring or receipt of persons, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation. The main purpose of human trafficking is for material gains where the individual who takes control knows the benefit of the sale of this other human. Previously, trafficking in human has been often defined as the trade in women and children for immoral purposes, however, now it only captures the relativity small percentage of people who are trafficked. (Smith 1) Moreover, there are various kinds of human trafficking such as sexual exploitation of women, forced marriage of young women, forced child labor, commercial sexual exploitation and more (Smith 1). All these result in suffering of the victim while the person in control gains much in form of material for making sales.

The research from various countries and different cases show that human trafficking results in serious pain to victims. The impact of human trafficking is huge in various perspectives such as health and social. For example, due to their horrific experiences, victims often experience severe and long-lasting mental health issues, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and depression. (Freida 2) These individuals go through suffering in the hands of the traffickers which are permanently imprinted in their minds and constantly have these thoughts. Thus, they get depressed over what they went through which may also cause other serious health concerns. (Freida 1) For example, Nasreen was 15 years old when she was sent to her uncle in New York because of their family's financial problem. Before she arrived, she was promised by her uncle that she will be going to a school and able to have a part-time job work in uncle's store. However, when she arrived, she was put straight into the work until late at night and she never gets paid for 2 years along with the constant verbal abuse and punishment. (NYC) Like this case, human traffickers often convince individuals by telling them that they would offer them a happier and stability life, successful relationship and better finance. (Counselling Today).

There are individuals who survive such tragedies while there are others who get permanently distorted in the mind because of the incidences they go through. Human trafficking is already named a crime industry and there has been re-victimization of the victims instead of protection. Thus, there is the abuse of these persons ad exploitation which go t extreme ends of permanent disabilities if not taken care of well. The case is such that they get an opportunity to be in a good area of work but it turns out that those are only empty promises to attract the victims who end up falling for them and things take a different course when they are available. Such cases are rampant especially because poverty is the main reason that drives them to that point. There needs to be a rehabilitation and reintegration of the victims even though the process is complex. Re-victimization occurs because providing protection depends on the willingness of the victims to cooperate with the competent authorities.

The victims and survivors should be protected with the care and support from the government and the organizations because the trafficking results in serious pain to victims and they are the ones who should be cared. They usually rely on the drugs since they feel they can't escape from the trauma of trafficking (Mohr 23). The government needs to intervene and make sure that these individuals get the care they need when they are out of such bondage. Some victims even try to commit crimes in order to go into the jail where they think are safe and protected. (Mohr 23) This is the reality that victims find difficulty in asking for help and this would be the reason why the rate of trafficking is not decreasing. However, there is a need to provide a friendly environment that these victims can report any incidences of trafficking which will help in getting to ensure that they follow up such cases. Within those victims, Ohio currently has developed a program in order to empower victims and to combat the trafficking (Mohr 23). The program encourages them to learn about human trafficking as well as to learn about how they can live safely and healthy. (Mohr 24) Furthermore, counseling is offered by the Department of Justice for survivors who suffer from mental health (NCBI). Since victims have fear of sharing their experience since they might have threatened by traffickers that they would harm themselves or their family, or it's painful for them to recall their memories, the counselors should be trained well so they can be prepared with another solution to it. (NCBI) Those counselors are the most important people who can influence the survivors in a good way by providing them a support mentally. Thus, there should be more counselors available who are well educated. There is also a need to apply strict measures to counter the process of human trafficking such that those who commit the offence are made to spend a good part of their life in jail so that there is not a repeat for the same.

To prevent human trafficking, people have to know how to protect themselves from the traffickers. The best way is to avoid them before they approach. Hence, it would be helpful to know how they approach individuals and who are their targets. First, traffickers target the ones who are struggling with their basic needs. They prey on individuals who are poor, vulnerable, in an unsafe or unstable living situation or are in search of a better or different life. (Wiliam 2) This can be known from the cases that were happening because the victims mostly wanted new jobs. Within the hard situation that they have, they might be too busy with just getting the jobs, not looking at each condition that they would take. Hence, it is important that people should have doubt about what people are offering and have many thoughts before they make decisions (Wiliam 2). Traffickers also even kidnap people for trafficking and the method varies. For example, elders asking for help, camouflage as a deliveryman, and make intention accident. People should know their method and be cautious.

There are counter-arguments from the supporters of human trafficking who say that it is not illegal because individuals joined them by themselves without any force. Also, they would claim that it's making a lot of money, so there's no need to stop. Of course, in some cases, individuals come by themselves after seeing the help-wanted advertisement. However, the condition they were offered at the start and at the end is different, which indicates that this dealing is still illegal. Moreover, it is true that this industry would bring money as well as the power for some group of people, however, this is for one's profit that's using people's workforce and ignoring their rights. The profits in this case are only one-sided making it unfair and unjust for the victims because they stand to earn nothing in the end. Thus, human trafficking should be considered as illegal behavior thus it should be controlled and denied.

It is important to fight human trafficking by using any methods possible. Education on the topic will help individuals identify any indicators of human trafficking and identify a potential victim who they will help or seek the intervention of the authorities. Since poverty is a main cause of the crime, it will be crucial to have businesses that provide jobs for these individuals, skills training and also providing other opportunities to help the survivors. The media also needs to play their role in the case of human trafficking especially in shaping the perceptions of the public about the same and guiding the public conversation. Everybody including students, healthcare providers and the attorneys also have a role to play in representing the victims of human trafficking and making sure they are well informed.

Conclusion

Human trafficking is a serious problem because it is endless and it also has the possibility of development. Since human trafficking is the violence of people, the government should be focused on this problem so that everyone can live their lives safely. The government needs to put strict measures on the issue to notice people of the consequences awaiting them if they engage in the same.
