The term sport characterizes an activity that involves physical effort and skill through a person competes against others for entertainment objectives. The word sport can also be used to describe a physical activity that requires competitive participation, physical ability, and skills of individuals primarily for the entertainment of participants or spectators. Today, sports - also referred to as games - are considered to be a universal element that is evident in all cultures. Thousands of sportsmen and women of today, originating from different cultures often converge in a single location to compete in different forms of sports.

In such gatherings, the sports personalities team up for a common objective despite their variations in cultures, ethnicities, skin pigmentation and language. Consequently, this develops a new mold of a global culture where persons from different nationalities overcome the barriers of their diverse cultural backgrounds to support the sports. As such, it can be stated that sports have an immense influence on the culture of different societies. This essay will address the various ways through which sports influences the cultures of people in the society.

Entertainment is an essential component in a human life. It provides a means through which persons can drown the monotonies of their day-to-day lives. Additionally, in the medical perspective, entertainment is an effective method of relieving stress. As such, millions of people from different parts of the world have taken sports to be a core source of entertainment in their lives. Moreover, the need to compete in different sports between different nations and cultures have grown tremendously over the centuries. Today, this aspect is marked by the numerous international sporting competitions that are undertaken by sports personalities originating from different nationalities and cultures.

Consequently, the increased need for different nations to compete in games have made sports to have an immense influence on cultures of different societies. This phenomenon can be evidenced can be evidenced through the actions of sports participants from different societies as they support their favorite teams. For example, Brazil has been a major soccer-playing nation over the years, and the Brazilian national team has participated in the soccer World Cup competitions on several occasions. As such, other nations from around the world have often found themselves supporting Brazils national team during its finals.

Additionally, to mark their support, such international fans often adopt the Brazilian national colors, verbal phrases, and slogans among others. Moreover, some international soccer enthusiasts adopt the dressing code of their favorite Brazilian players to mark their support for the nations team. All such adopted phenomena greatly influence the cultures of different nations from around the world. As such, it is plausible to state that different sports unify different cultures through sporting entertainments.


Participation in sports has also influenced the cultures of different persons in various parts of the world. This has been facilitated by the cultural interactions of people from different backgrounds, who have a common objective of participating in sporting competitions. For this reason, the cultural interaction of people can be characterized to be a complex process through which persons from diverse intercultural backgrounds interact with each other. Additionally, on this logic, the sports and sporting activities can be stated to be the complex process that brings populace from diverse cultures together.

Moreover, through the complex process of cultural interaction, sports have provided a platform through which the global communities can interact. Furthermore, sports have become a symbol of community identity, where they serve as the focal point of interaction, engagement, pride as well as achievement. As such, to achieve such elements of community identity, different cultures have been forced to interact with each other to facilitate intercultural sporting events. Ultimately, the diversity of sporting activities has turned sports into an ideal medium through which people from different cultures, age groups, and social-economic backgrounds can meet and interact.

Societal Values

Sports also influence global cultures through societal values. This is because a culture is a social system that shares a unique set of common beliefs and values. Additionally, such social values facilitate a collective understanding of the social expectations in society. In this case, participation in sports and sporting events is a socially approved societal value in diverse cultures from all over the world. Furthermore, it can be hypothesized that sporting is a globally acceptable phenomenon, which is important due to the society values it yields. In this case, sports can be classified to be naturally acceptable social values that society members are expected to participate in for competition or enjoyment.

Additionally, for such social values to be accomplished, members of different cultures are required to participate in various sports and sporting events. This phenomenon is normally passed from one generation to the other in different cultures from all over the world. The sportspersons are expected to use their cultural acquired values to compete effectively with other players that are either from the same or different cultures. Additionally, such sporting events also act as a way of showing casing communities rich cultures. This can be manifested through the costumes that such sportspersons use as well as the festivities that accompany such sporting events. In light of these arguments, it is plausible to say that sports influences cultures through expected and approved societal values.

Additionally, it is valid to state that sports influence cultures through their aspects of social inclusion. The phrase social inclusion characterizes the process through which the terms in which persons take part in various communitys cultural events is improved. Societal inclusion is focused on improving the dignity, abilities as well as opportunities for persons in a community. This is in reference to their social identity. Moreover, with respect to social inclusion, most communities today have found the need to structure systems through which all community members can participate in on a regular basis.

This is irrespective of such peoples societal standing, educational status or health status. As such, most communities have adopted sports and sporting activities as their primary tools of social. Through sports, all persons in a community - whether poor or rich, young or old - can participate. Additionally, most communities today adopt new sporting cultures as a continuous way of promoting the aspect of social inclusion in their cultures. Moreover, such adopted cultures are usually copied from other communities in different parts of the world. As such, the constant but gradual adoption of such sporting trends immensely influences the cultures of various communities in various parts of the globe.


In conclusion, it is valid to state that sports influences global cultures in areas of entertainment, interaction, societal values and social inclusion. Through sports, sportspersons, and teams from different global cultures converge in similar arenas for sporting competitions and entertainment. Additionally, sports facilitate the interactions of persons from different cultural backgrounds and in turn promotes the cultural development of different communities. Furthermore, sports facilitate the adoption of new and beneficial societal values from different cultures around the world. Ultimately, sports facilitate the attainment of new sporting cultures that can be employed by communities to promote their aspects of social inclusion.
