Introduction
Being a medic is both a calling and a professional occupation which directly involves service to humanity. From a tender age, I have always been mesmerized by the work that doctors do in the community by saving lives and also helping people to live more fulfilling livelihood. Doctors are friendly people, and during my younger years, they were my motivation and heroes. Every time I would be taken to see a medic, I would fancy their lovely attires and also how responsible and concerned they were about myself and other people waiting in the line to be attended. Hence, it became my lifetime dream to become a doctor, and I became interested in learning the meaning of the terms used in medicine as well as the roles of doctors through my parent's personal computer. I viewed studying medicine as a vocation that will get me engaged with people and push me from my comfort zone, which is what I have always yearned for, a challenge. Growing up near a local hospital, I couldn't help but admire the working zeal of medics and nurses in attending to the sick. They approached every patient with the same zeal and professionalism as it was in their system to do what they did, and every day, observing medics pushed my zeal to join a medical school.
The desire and zeal to become a medic bore fruits when after my undergraduate degree, I performed well in sciences to warrant my position in a medical school. During my first year in medical school, I performed very well, and I put on all my effort towards mastering the skill and also acquiring knowledge that was necessary to become a competent medic. However, disaster struck when my grandmother passed on, and my father had a heart attack. After these events, my life came tumbling due to psychological discomfort owing to my close relationship with my grandmother and my father. Besides, our family fared poorly financially due to the high cost of medication and the fact that my father, who was the financial pillar of the family, could not work. Despite the challenges that I faced within the duration of mourning my grandmother and watching my father's health deteriorate and nurse him back to health, the events acted as a motivation to pursue my medical career.
Nursing my father after encountering a heart attack was a direct eye-opener into the challenges faced by medics and the vital position that doctors have towards reassuring and giving hope to the families whose loved ones are sick. I vowed to continue my education in medical school and to become a competent medic with the patient needs and interests coming first. My father recovery was a miracle that was facilitated by the healthcare providers, and as I rejoin the medical school to complete my studies, I envision to become a source of hope for many patients in need of a listening and caring medic. After experiencing Hurricane Maria, which devastated my school and community, I was further encouraged to finish my medical school and get a licensure to practice. The first responders during the Hurricane Maria played an essential role in securing the lives of those who were injured, and after medical school, I would like to work as a first responder or in the ER to save lives.
