Introduction
The is nothing more fulfilling than being among the college students both academically and socially. Students strive to achieve their academic and social endeavours to accomplish their dreams. However, a high rate of students does not meet their goals in the long run, and therefore there is a need to look into the causes of such.
Participation is a critical factor for students to attend classes and follow through the coursework based on voluntary question and answers, contributing to discussions and both groups and in class. Teachers who promote learning and participation in class are those who can interact verbally or non-verbally with the students, allows the students to explore issues widely and in depth. Understanding the differences among the students such that there are those who are reflective, others are shy and sharp is key in enabling the student to find a conducive environment to learn.
The class provides an avenue where students can express their knowledge comfortably. Completing the classwork tasks on time ensures a profound feeling of accomplishment which goes a long way to motivate the student and a good sense of self-worth. However, failure to tackle a given task makes students to beat themselves thinking they could have accomplished which dents self-confidence and self-esteem. Missing, also, comes the feeling of being unprepared for the class and the student views themselves as being out of place. The struggle of handling endless-to-do list gives the feeling of being extremely overwhelmed triggering indulgence of other destructive habits such as missing class, procrastination and missing classes.
Students failure in class has been linked to many factors such as procrastination and poor time management where the students have found to wait until the last minute to rush through an assignment thereby submitting substandard work and subsequent achievement of poor grades. Some projects are left uncompleted due to lack of drive and initiative makes the students quite. Moreover, students who fail to attend class associates their behaviour to the fear and lack of confidence as they grave for being harassed in class and being asked to stand and answer a question.
The internal drive that the students develop from taking control of the course of their life, desire to be the best in class and also to enable them to relate well with others propel the students to develop a positive attitude towards academics. Equally important is the drive that is generated through external factors such a reward from the teachers, encouragement by the parents, threat of punishment and the need for money has the effect of making students attend class, and complete the coursework on time.
Unavoidable circumstances such as health have been found to deter some students from attending classes and completing assignments. Given the strict routine of diagnosing tuberculosis, some students do not attend the class as they are attending healthcare. Benefits that are derived from college is the acquisition of knowledge and building of a clear career path. Proper etiquette and manners are developed through learning from friends and teachers.
Procrastination is a vice that is developed by an individual, not the society. Students grapple with the phobia of failure, an excessive desire to deliver perfect work, lack of energy to do an assignment and absence of focus and direction made the students resort to procrastination.
