Leadership

The greatest health indicator of running a business is in the lead or in the absence of it. Leadership can be defined as the ability to catalyze group efforts in order to achieve or exceed organizational goals, establishing a motivating climate, forming partnerships and stimulating team development (Biemann 776). Leadership is motivating, influencing and contributing to people's behavior change. A leader encourages people to work together for a common and motivated goal because they feel part of the process; they give their best and achieve often exceptional results. As a great teacher, the leader directs the potential of each for the benefit of the whole; places the right people in the right places and has the sensitivity to harmonize the talents so that the defects of the orchestra members - in this case, the employees - are obscured by their qualities.

A gym is made up of all the professionals who work in it, from the person in charge of the management of the gym to its monitors, personal trainers, technicians, administrative staff and maintenance personnel. That they know each other and know what each one's work is important for the proper functioning of the center. A good manager should also know how to delegate, listen and communicate to employees what the goals of the gym are. Working together is the best way to achieve the objectives. Unfortunately, managers at gyms and sports centers do not always have a good knowledge of their business. Often, the function is carried out by Physical Education teachers without administrative experience, who learn in practice and often make mistakes. The need to train has been perceived more and more, so much that the main courses of management in this area are having a marked demand.

In the management of gyms, personalized attention is very important, after all that is one of the reasons why people decide to join the gym. Therefore, it is important to have good professionals who know perfectly the type of machinery present and how it works; Having a person in the reception of the gym who can inform of the different schedules, offers, variety of activities that are offered, is fundamental for the client to know the services that are offered in the gym; and the cleanliness of the premises since this is an important factor that affects clients. It is essential to have a team committed to the project, from reception to the last coach, the staff should feel the business as their own. To a large extent, the success of the gym depends on them. They will become the best marketing ally if they are able to exploit all the possibilities that the gym offers and properly treat customers. It is important to remember that in this type of business in which there is so much competition, a negative point can weigh too much.

To ensure that the machinery of the human team works perfectly, it is vital that the leader exercises a marked leadership. It is not about imposing his/her will, but about being aware of all the needs of the team, and knowing how to correct any errors that may occur. Every leader must have different abilities in order to be successful in their performance as such. Being sociable, and having tact and diplomacy, will allow the gym leader to achieve the cooperation of the staff. Achieving empathy with others will give him/her the bases to achieve professional prestige while having a development of skills in socialization will result in a greater scope of his/her actions (popularity).

From the above features, it can be stated that the multi-hierarchical model of organizational leadership that fits a gym is horizontal leadership where the management and the staff work in an interdisciplinary way. Instead of being a company that works with top-down leadership, people from various groups (fitness, sales, maintenance, etc.) are taken to develop projects together. This step also involves consumers (partners or customers) and suppliers in the generation of value. All become doers and thinkers, instead of having the doers in one corner and the thinkers in the other. An example of this situation is in World Fitness Class, a network of gyms in Russia. In this company, they have created a "culture team" made up of common staff and senior executives from different disciplines. The team is responsible for implementing and supporting the company's cultural initiatives. The goal is to create "a whole" larger than the sum of the parts.

Leadership Style

There are several types of leadership styles. The first one is autocratic leadership (authoritarian leadership), that is, the leader imposes his/her ideas and decisions on the group, not allowing open dialogue or the implementation of solutions that are not his/hers (Rees & Christine 92). Autocratic leaders dominate, issue orders and expect full obedience from subordinates, are feared by the group, which only works when the leader is present. This type of leadership cannot be used in the gym since it may make the team unmotivated.

The second leadership style is democratic leadership. It is participatory leadership, where each member of the group is encouraged to think about options for decision making and task execution that will be debated and then approved by the group; employee participation is encouraged, valued, and rewarded, and the leader acts only as support to the team.

The third type of leadership is liberal leadership, or Lasseiz-Faire, which elevates the degree of trust in the group or individual to 100%, delegating the decisions and allowing total freedom (Rees & Christine 95). It is useful for evaluating the outcome of a qualification process, maturity, interpersonal relationship, and to increase the self-confidence of team members. In this type of leadership, the leader only acts as a facilitator and stimulator of the creativity of the collaborators, however, this type of leadership cannot be applied in groups whose members do not have the knowledge or experience in the decision making or the execution of certain tasks.

The fourth leadership style is situational leadership. It is the kind of leadership that correlates leadership versus motivation versus power. The leader makes clear the expected result for the task, directs his/her employees and establishes the functions and objectives to be achieved within a predetermined time, taking into account the level of seniority or maturity of the staff.

There is also positive and humanized leadership style. This type of leadership has its cornerstones in Positive Psychology, which focuses on increasing positive results for individuals, teams and corporations, achievements, a sense of mission and purpose, and using the strengths and talents of each individual to promote development full of professional life (Sharin & Paul 27). The advantages are Increased productivity, cooperation and collaboration; Reduction of Absenteeism and Burnout Index; Creative and cognitive flexibility, and increased organizational performance. Positive leadership promotes increased motivation and consequently productivity because as the team feels part of the whole and receives stimuli to maintain self-esteem, their degree of dedication to work rises exponentially.

The humanized leadership style will be adopted in the AAA gym. This leadership style focuses on people, whether they are collaborators or clients because it considers that the success of a company or work team depends, to a large extent, on the relationships established between those people. It is important to have leaders who encourage employees to look to the future with hope and positive energy. Humanized leadership takes into account the importance of emotions in the lives of the people that make up each organization. Humanized leaders are those who develop their emotional intelligence to infect and inspire others. Leadership must be exercised from the person and directed towards people. This reasoning that is so simple to express and so complicated to put into practice is the one that bases this style of leadership. The success that a company obtains will have to do with the way in which the relationships between these people are established. There are also fundamental qualities that a humanized leadership has to specify on a daily basis and these are synthesized in the "7 C": coherence, conviction, credibility, trust, communication, commitment, and conscience (Sharin & Paul 33).

The leader has to be a great motivator. He/she should know how to lift the astral of people and creates conditions for them to feel good and valued in the workplace. A common mistake of leadership is to be too strict to the team, lowering employees' self-esteem. Employees become unmotivated and lose enthusiasm because of this wrong way of leading. No matter how much people make mistakes - and they all err - they need understanding...
