The first issue entails personal problems between the two leaders resulting from Robert' infidelity with Jack attributable for the divorce of the two and Jack's wife moving in with Robert. It is a sign of betrayal, espionage, and lack of morality when employees infringe on the private lives of their work mates. The second problem is physical fights and verbal arguments which are illegal behaviors in any workplace. The third problem is bad behavior and breach of workplace Ethical Code of Conduct despite the two being department heads. It is a mainstream problem considering that infidelity between coworkers or their families and fighting occur due to unethical behavior. The last problem is the lack of both cooperation and understanding among the two departmental heads which are acts contrary to the expectation of an efficient team.
Legal Issues and Institutional Policies
The four problems present legal consequences. Employment and safety laws govern violence and fighting in working environments. Therefore, there is a possibility of the verbal arguments and physical fighting attracting legal lawsuits. Furthermore, the bad conduct displayed by the two is a breach of the professional code of conduct which draws legal issues regarding unethical behavior. The prompt presents a violation of non-fraternization and no-dating policies that should preclude the chances of infidelity and affairs between the workers and their families, According to Raines (2013), behavioral-based policies should restrict individuals within a given working environment from engaging in love affairs with co-workers or their families within and outside the organization.
Proposal for Dealing with the Problems
I would deal with the issues following two key steps namely documentation and mediation.
Documentation
It entails having accurate accounts of the occurrence of the problems. The initial step of the documentation process is to have the exact dates when the fighting and verbal argument ensued to give accurate and the proof that difference between Jack and Robert exist. The process of documenting the issues also means having a discussion with the two individuals so that they give their sentiments and the way they would like the issues solved. Documentation should indicate the number of times that Robert and Jack have engaged in verbal arguments and confrontation and the severity of hostility.
Mediation
The best way to deal with the problems is mediation which involves searching for amicable solutions and letting the adverse parties know how their conduct affect both teamwork effectiveness and the realization of company's mission and vision (Raines, 2013). Furthermore, I will teach Robert and Jack about the adverse ramifications of their misconduct. I will tell the two leaders that as frontrunners, it is a requirement that they lead from the front by setting good examples to their followers and not encouraging a foul chain response of immoral behavior that can perpetuate down to the junior employees. It is essential to explain to the two individuals that their bad conduct affects their professional lives. Lastly, the mediation process will be easy if the two will apply their leadership skills and expertise in solving the issue.
Team Building Checklist
The checklist is in accordance to Dyer's (2011) suggestions on the strategies of ensuring team building and cooperation within a workplace.
Discussion between Robert and Jack before involving others.
Setting expectation, norms, goals, and aims of the negation and mediation.
