What is your culture background?

Being from Peru, my culture was greatly influenced by the Amerindian and European cultures. This was as a result of the interactions with my people and the aforementioned people. However, my peoples culture distinctly can be denoted by its customs, traits and beliefs. Our culture makes us have diverse customs and these customs can be seen through our numerous festivals yearly. The festivals mostly are a fusion of both pre-Hispanic religion and Catholicism, which is the dominant religion and belief from where I come from.

What are the most important values of your culture?

To me, the most essential value of our culture would be our religious background. In Peru, a large population is Roman Catholic, though we are allowed to exercise freedom of religion, Catholicism is what most of us have been brought up with hence, its a value that is of great importance to our people. This can be seen through even the various festivals Catholic rule.

How are your cultures values different than that of mine?

Well, you being American I believe your cultural values are not based much on a religious basis like ours. Since even due to the separation of church and state in your country, unlike in mine where the church plays a big part in the state. Hence, I believe that may be the biggest difference in our culture values since even our cultures festivities are based on more religious events whether its catholic or pre-Hispanic religious events.

Are your cultural values the same to my cultural values?

In a way, our cultural values may have a little similarity, due to the fact that our culture was influenced by European and also Amerindian culture, whereby Amerindians are the native inhabitants of North America. However, I believe the similarity in our culture are quite different. For one, our mode of dressing, cuisine, language music and dance in our culture are not the same as Americans at all, we are more traditional and a large population in Peru still love the traditional way and actually live that way to date, unlike in America where the culture has been greatly diversified due to the numerous ethnic groups that inhabit North America that doesnt allow for a specific culture of the American people to be clearly denoted.

What do you think are some positive things about being a member of your culture group?

A positive thing about being a member of my culture groups is the sense of identity I derive from it. One can travel and live in so many places in ones life, but as the saying goes north, east, south or west, home is best. This is because belonging to a culture actually helps you to identify yourself and gives you the inner feeling of actually belonging somewhere.

How much do you feel a part of you culture origin? Do you participate in you cultural community?

Well, at times due to the fact I moved here to America and have stayed for many years, one tends to adapt to the culture here but I still greatly feel that my culture is a part of me. I try as much to engage in activities that promote my culture like making specific meals that are our cuisine back home. As well as going for events that are specifically gatherings held for Peruvian

Do you feel like you are a part of the American culture?

Yes, American culture to me is about freedom and diversity. What I mean is when I think of American culture to me it resembles the diversity of people in America and the freedom that they have to be who they are. So to me I feel like I belong and am part of American culture.

Have you or your family experienced discrimination based on your cultural group?

When we first moved here, the Hispanic population was quite high and most people couldnt tell if you are from Mexico, Peru, or just any South American country. Due, to this since most people had already been accustomed to the Mexican people discrimination was at a minimum since most people unless told assumed that we were all from one culture and background. However, I have had a few cases but nothing major myself that warrants to say that I was greatly discriminated against.

Since coming to America have you had any communication barriers?

No, I have learned to be very conversant in English and this has helped me to minimize any communication barriers. However Spanish and Aymara are still my first language.

Do you speak more than 1 language?

Of course, apart from English, I speak Spanish and a local dialect of Peru called Aymara.

When I think about culture, I know that it describes how I was raised, my behaviors, beliefs, values, and ideas that I learn during my youth and how it affects me as I grow into an adult. It is very interesting to learn more information about another different culture. When I look at my family, I see that age comes before everything; and because I am younger, I am treated as such and am expected to behave a certain manner towards the elders in my family.

It was incredibly interesting to get information from Mrs. P because she grew up in a different environment than me. I meet Mrs. P during organization for Guardian of Children
