Introduction
The success of a business enterprise lies in the ability of the entrepreneur to effectively exercise and promote leadership and management skills. In the absence of these features, the business becomes vulnerable and incompetent in steering the achievement of its core objectives. This is so because the business experiences reduced production, which in this case results in reduced profit margin due to loss of relevance in the company's competitive market. It is thus important that these features, leadership and management, are integrated in the day to day operations of a business entity chiefly because they nurture and promote cohesiveness amongst the employees and the administration while positively influence the entity's relevance in its competitive market (Duggal, 2019). This essay compares and contrasts my leadership and management skills to those of Suzan-a supervisor I used to work for a few months ago.
Typically, my current role is that of a leader while my supervisor was more of a manager than a leader. This is because as a leader I have people that trust and follow my guidance, which in turn facilitates the attainment of the set objectives (Duggal, 2019). On the other hand, Suzan is more of a manager because she has people working under her. All of them play a major but different role in the attainment of the set objectives.
The major difference between me and my supervisor is the fact that as a leader I have a workforce that follows my guidance and directions while motivating them to work better to the expectations of their respective positions and more importantly, to those of the company. This helps me create a conducive working environment for the distinct pool of workers while positively influencing their engagement hence a relevant and productive team (Duggal, 2019). Suzan, on the other hand, is a manger because she controls the affairs and operations of the business while observing that everything works as expected and more importantly, identify gap and loopholes that would incapacitate the attainment of the enterprise's growth and objectives.
While leadership and management go hand in hand, a leader exhibits certain behavior that in this case differ from those of manager. Personally, I bring everyone who works with me on board as a way of establishing an all-inclusive kind of a work set up. This helps me in reaching out to different employees while assessing and evaluating their performance (Arruda, 2016). This then helps me the create change depending on how the employees want and more specifically, in a manner that suits and complements the operations of the organization (Next Generation, 2018). In addition, it is also in my behavior as a leader to follow up on the initiated activities while initiating good ideas that brings forth change and more importantly, develop power with people. Contrary to my behavior, Suzan being a manger behaves in an authoritative manner hence telling those that work below her what and when to do things. She also tries to be the hero more specifically because she exercises her power over the workforce.
Ultimately, my leadership style does not compare to that of my supervisor as she exercises autocracy while I highly embrace participative and democratic style of leadership. In other words, Suzan exercises authority over the workforce while I create an all-inclusive kind of an environment that accommodates each worker while motivating them to do their best to meet the set goals.
