Ethics in the Work Place

My main aim would be to seek harmony between the management and the employees. It is important that employees feel appreciated and respected. At the same time, it is key that the management utilizes their resources and ensure maximum profits. The first step will be to talk to the management so as to know their goals. Then I will hold a meeting with the employees to listen to their grievances. It will be importance to make it known to the employees that their employers would like to be assured that no one is wasting time and resources. That is the reason as to why the system was put in place. After that, I would discuss with the workers on their breaks either personal or lunch which should not consume a lot of time. Finally, I would explain that the reason as to why the supervisors are listening into calls is to ensure quality but not invading their privacy. By explaining the actions of the management and listening to the workers, it will be easy to reach a decision that favors both parties.

There are several ethical issues presented in the moral dilemma. First of all, the management did not decide impartially. The decision to put up the monitoring system did not consider the interests of both employers and employees. This is an issue that made the workers reject the system since they felt oppressed. Many employees felt that the system invaded their privacy since their calls were tapped into and their breaks were also monitored. The monitoring system only favored the management's interest of increasing profits. The management should be open to ideas on how to make the monitoring system favorable to both parties. This will mean that the employees will work out of respect and not fear.

Secondly, the management should be aware that their decision to implement the system would have good and bad consequences. The monitoring system had its benefits. Listening in on calls was a way to ensure quality services. The supervisors would correct whenever they felt the service was not good. Monitoring breaks ensured that no one wasted time that was meant for working. However, the employees felt like the system was a way of micro-managing them. It is important to give an employee space and freedom to perform to their best. It is hard for someone to try a new and creative tactic with a supervisor listening in since the two may have differing opinions.

The third issue is that the employees used emotion and impulse instead of reason. It is evident that the system had proven to be useful to the management. Instead of demanding the removal of the system, they should have requested for some changes. As much as the employees have rights in the workplace, it is important to bear in mind that their greatest responsibility is to ensure profits in the organization. Therefore, instead of thinking of invasion of privacy and oppression by firing and reprimanding, they should find ways to make the company more profitable so as to adjust the monitoring system. Moreover, they should be aware that change is inevitable in workplaces thus they should be flexible.

Finally, there is a possibility the employees were not treated as they deserved after the implementation of the system. Reprimanding an employee since he spent a lot of time on the phone and even firing him was not fair. Some clients talk a lot and it would be rude to cut them short. It is important to ensure a client is satisfied by answering all their questions and listening to their concerns. Instead of firing, the workers should be warned and trained on tactics on how to handle clients who talk a lot in a polite manner. Moreover, the management should also reward those who work well according to the system. In this way, the employees will see something good about the monitoring system.
