Dubai is among the most developed cities globally. Time and again, there is a story that captures one's attention in connection with Dubai. People around the world savor the dream of travelling to this city that has grown over the years to its current status. However, the question that begs is how this major transformation took place. In the book Leadership Dubai Style: The Habits to Achieve Remarkable Success, Tommy Weir (2015) equates the success of this city to leadership. One would want to understand what leaders in this part of the world do to achieve such results. Different habits have been explained in the book as reasons for the success of Dubai. In Chapter 9, the focus is on Majlis. It is an integral component of the Middle Eastern cultural history. It is the point where opinion seeking occurs, and decisions are made.
Before delving into the Majlis effect, it is important to have a background of the practices that have helped Dubai get to where it is. One is by focusing on the future generation. From the earliest days of this city, the leaders have laid emphasis on the future aiming to ensure that everyone achieves personal economic stability. The second habit is an ambitious drive. Life was tough in Dubai in the past. The city was plagued with diseases with no electricity. Moreover, leaders had limited resources to address the challenges. Dubai was forced to advance and grow so as to survive. The zeal to succeed and survive became a habit. As a result, the city started establishing an economy and got out of the survival stage. Another success factor for Dubai has been the ability to act decisively and provide guidance. Leaders lead in this city. There is a practice of centralized decision making which is a fair and efficient autocratic style. People in Dubai are expected to make decisions and lead based on their accountability levels.
An environment that enables others to succeed has also been established. From the outset, it appears that Dubai offered nothing to the early inhabitants. That is, till the leaders of the city provided an environment that would promote the success of others. Years before the official decree are calling for the first free trade zone; the city attracted expats with the pledge of free trade. It occurred to the leaders that the success of others meant that success of Dubai. Keeping with the strategy is the other success factor for Dubai. Establishing a safe environment relied on the city presenting itself as a hub. In the years that followed, the city maintained the hub strategy. The emirate has currently transformed into a global hub, yet still, retains the same core strategy.
Moreover, the leaders of Dubai acknowledge that crises are real. Therefore, as opposed to trying to avoid them by every means necessary, they focus on improving growth opportunities and reducing post-crises moments. In a nutshell, crisis leadership has played a significant role in the success of the city. The leaders have also learned to keep the focus. In this regard, it must be emphasized that the people will go where the leader looks. In this city, leaders decide. On the other hand, they have good vision and are not distracted by trivial issues. They provide direction to their followers and ensure they are focused on the goal. However, it is not always enough to set direct alone. Implementation is the pillar of leadership success. It will demand personally ensuring that a project is progressing well and this can be achieved by proactively monitoring.
It is also vital to realize that much of focus is placed on followership in Dubai. Leaders in this city appreciate the fact that loyalty has a significant role as opposed to positional authority. Loyalty is bidirectional in this town in the sense that involved parties need to give and receive. The most important habit that has ensured that success of Dubai and which remains the major point of focus in chapter 9 of the book Leadership Dubai Style: The Habits to Achieve Remarkable Success is consultation. Consultation impedes leadership progress. However, leaders cannot act alone. Between the two ends is the Majlis.
