Introduction

The United States is the most diverse country in the world. It is the only country that was built by immigrants from Europe and Asia and slaves who were drawn from Africa. From the periods of the Civil War to the Reconstruction, America has undergone many transformations. For example, the debate on racial segregation, although it is still emotive in the country, has become more tolerable. Black Americans can now cast their votes, own property, and enjoy all the other rights enjoyed by their white counterparts. Be that as it may, the issue of immigration, is still all too sensitive, and one that is used as a campaign strategy for those seeking elective positions. For example, contenders of the office of the President of the United States are often keen on their policy on immigration because it can be a great determinant for political success or failure.

The recent reports the emerged about a caravan of thousands of people from the Caribbean going to the United States, via Mexico has intensified the debate on immigration even further. It is an issue that has essentially torn the country right in middle due to political orientation differences (Esposito, n.p). Both Republicans and Democrats have a conflicting view about this caravan. Whereas the GOP, led by President Donald Trump, believes that the Caravan is an invasion into the country, and which should be confronted by military intervention, the left wing of the political divide holds the humanitarian view and argues that these are people running away from perils in their countries to seek out the US - a land of opportunities (Esposito, n.p). These two controversies continue to raise political undertones in the country. This paper holds the latter view and argues that humanity should be given priority in this whole issue.

As indicated in the foremost paragraph, immigration is not a new issue in the US. Millions of people seek out this land of opportunities in different facets in order to better their lives and those of their families back at home (Wharton, n.p). While unlawful immigration is unlawful and unacceptable, people from any part of the globe should be allowed to try their fortune in America if they believe that that is the channel to personal progress. In any case, the US was built by immigrants who came to this country many centuries ago for different reasons (Wharton, n.p). Today, many young people come to seek higher education in the US because most Universities in this country are the best in the world. Business organizations and entrepreneurs invest in the US as they have faith in the security of this country, being the strongest nation in the world (Wharton, n.p). America is the most mature democracy anywhere in the world. It is also has a capitalist economic system.

As a result, investors are optimistic that their businesses will be free from market dynamics that emanate from political instability and violence. The multitudes of people determined to enter the United States to look for a decent life. Although Mexico ironically welcomed the migrants and accommodated them for some time, the leadership of the US has remained adamant that the caravan will not be allowed into the country. This is also ironic because the US is in a better economic position to host the migrants compared to Mexico. Human activists and the Democratic Party argue that it will be inhumane for the people to be turned away having travelled all the way to try their shot at life in the country.

On the other hand, the White House has consistently regarded entry of the migrants into the US as an invasion that needs to be repelled by the military. To this end, President Trump has dispatched more than 5,200 military troops to secure the border (Davis, n.p). This has some sense in it since the issue of security of the country is a sole mandate of the federal government, and the identity of the migrants is unknown (Davis, n.p). There could be some criminal elements among them. Be that as it may, critics of the measure taken by the federal government content that deploying the military excessive use of force on presumably innocent and unarmed migrants (Davis, n.p), whose only crime is having the determination to better their lives.

In view of the security concerns, the president is arguing that the only migrants who will be allowed into the country are those who choose to enter through the legal procedures stipulated in the law (Semple, n.p). This implies that the migrants have to undergo thorough scrutiny before being allowed entry into the country. But this is a problem that can be solved in this scenario without the involvement of the US military. The border police and immigration officers can be ordered to operate at the border to ensure that only good people get the pass (Semple, n.p). Other vulnerable groups such as single mothers with small children can be given asylum and allowed to stay in the country.

In addition to security threats, the government believes that the caravan was politically orchestrated by the Democrats in order to gain political mileage in the run-up to the recently concluded mid-term elections. Some of the questions asked by the GOP is how the caravan is able to survive for all those days in in a mile's journey (Semple, n.p). Accordingly, they argue that the Democrats have sponsored the mass migration in order to taint the name of the government in charge. These allegations are yet to be ascertained.

Conclusion

In sum, the caravan heading to the United States has elicited unending debate on its authenticity. Notably, however, the issue has raised political undertones that have made the legality of the migration. While the federal government is genuinely concerned that migration could actually pose a security threat to the country, the Democrats are on the side of humanity. The latter hold the view that the migrants should be given a chance to try their fortunes in this country with limitless opportunities. In any case, they did not show any such threats of insecurity while in Mexico.

Regardless, the president has already deployed a troop of military officers at the border with the instruction that they should prevent the caravan from entering the United States at all costs, even if it calls of pulling a trigger on some of them. This indeed is an unfortunate situation for a country that is considered to the land of the free thinkers and welcoming citizens. In order to safeguard the reputation of the US in this respect, the government should move with speed and deal with this issue in a more professional and humane way. The approach that should be employed is one that gives the migrants an opportunity to fulfil the requirements of the law.
