Introduciton
Breadbasket Inc. faced a lot of problems due to the decisions that were made by the management without adequate consultation and planning. Majority of the leaders in the organization suggested that they should start closing down small plants and construct larger ones in areas near major town. Those who were for the idea that the company should start operating the large plants argued that if they had been able to operate the small ones, then it would also be easy to run the proposed large ones. However, those who opposed the idea stated that the management and employees were not skilled enough to perform the duties that could be linked to large ones. The individuals who advocated for a new large plant won and hence construction was to start.
Fred Callahan, the vice president of manufacturing was given the role to ensure that the plant was constructed within the shortest time possible so that the production could start in the new premises with the use of modern technology. It is evident that the manager had not done enough consultation to see all the challenges that could be experienced in the process of implementing the new plant. The plant manager, Morris Blake, was open to Callahan and informed him that the new plant could not work as first as he wished. He argued that the employees were not skilled and they would take time to adapt to the newly implemented strategies. Callahan seemed to be a dictator and hence he fired Blake with the accusation that he had a lot of negativity to the project and hence he appointed Arnold Grozier who was the assistant project manager. However, even after he took over, the project still failed.
It is evident that the decision made by the management could lead to more problems than solutions. Failure to listen to others is a great problem that can make the objectives of an organization to be unsuccessful. Listening is an important management skill that needs to be used by all leaders to ensure that they value the ideas of others. For instance, if the leaders who were supporting the establishment of the new plant consulted the reasons why some were rejecting it, then they would have laid down better strategies that could have brought positive resulted to the firm. The communication theory supports this concept and recommends that leaders should give other people chances to present their ideas since they can assist in decision making. Communication process should not only be one way where some few individuals give their ideas but do not want to listen to others. For example, if Callahan had listened to Blake on the reason why the project was difficult, then he would have consulted other managers on other alternatives. Therefore, the fall can be blamed on Callahan for his dictatorship ruling.
Conclusion
Organizational change requires time to widely consult on the challenges that are likely to be experienced and the measures that need to be put in place to ensure that the objective is successful. For instance, in this case, consultation could have made the managers realize that the employees needed to be trained on how to work with the new technology that had been introduced in the large plant. Lack of trained can be linked to the regular absenteeism of the workers because they found the new job difficult for them. Therefore, poor decisions by the managers can be associated with the failure of the project.
