Introduction
Management of a hotel needs a person with good interaction skills with people, professional person, calm and a person who can be approached easily in case of any issues. A hotel manager is delegated with the duties of making sure the management of the staff and hotel every day runs smoothly. Hotel managers are also held liable for financing and budgeting management. In this case, the hotel manager is expected to play functions like directing, organizing and planning of all services in the hotel inclusive of housekeeping, operations in the food and beverages area and the front office operations.
In the past, the ranks of the hotel managers began from being at the front desk to the managerial position. However, this has changed recently. For example, having an associate degree is enough qualification for being an assistant manager or a small hotel manager. In big hotels, it is hard for an assistant manager to rise to the top positions without having more educational qualification preferably a master's degree (MBA). Training of the managers at the department takes place in hotel-school programs where they undergo through internships that prepare them to be future managers. The retirement of experienced managers leaves open jobs for other hotel managers to apply. Some large chain hotels may allow their managers to work in other executive or managerial positions in the hotel.
Since hotels are always busy working 24-hours, work is still there during nights and weekends. Hotel managers, therefore, have to work approximately 40 or more hours every week. However, those managers that reside in the hotel have regular schedules of work, but they may go to work anytime. The pay that hotel managers receive vary considerably depending on the department assigned to them in the hotel and also the duties and responsibilities they perform. The average salary of a hotel manager's range from $77,000 to $146000. Some of the hotel managers can earn 25% bonuses that are exclusive of their basic salary. The benefits that some managers enjoy include services such as parking, laundry, meals, and lodgings. Other hotels give their managers plans that are profitable and sometimes accord them assistance in their education.
Although the hotel industry is expected to be more productive in the future, predictions say that hotel managers may have less growth in the number of opportunities available. This is because most hotels are expected to have economy class services and their length of stay will be extended, and such hotels do not need to hire a lot of managers. An increase in business trips and tourism to foreign countries may cause an increase in the growth of employment opportunities for hotel managers.
Qualifications needed for hotel managers include degrees in management of hotels and restaurants, work experience and in-service training. Sometimes a degree may not be essential but rather the knowledge relevant to the job. One can be a hotel manager in various places in the industry which include, motels, lodges, inns, country clubs, breakfast and bed accommodation, and large chain hotels. Hotel managers should have a wide range of business plans on methods to use to improve their services, increase the number of services offered and also the development of more facilities.
Current Trends in the Hotel Industry and Expected Evolution in the Future
According to Jayawardena et al. (151), the present and past trends have been analyzed, and a prediction is that the continued shortage of labor will gradually impact the hotel industry in the future. The economy sharing trend which has emerged recently has dramatically affected the hotel industry in Texas in which the revenues of the hotels has had an impact of a range of 8%-10% (Zervas et al. 687). This sharing economy is expected to affect the hotels with lower prices in the future which do not offer services to business travelers with the pricing of rooms being less aggressive.
According to Zhao (2018), a case study of China shows trends in the lifestyle of Chinese, an increase in the income of middle people, the growth in the Gross Domestic Productivity (GDP) of China and development in infrastructure have all had an impact in the hotel industry of China. Most of the Chinese are spending a lot of money on luxurious hotels, and this has helped the hotel industry business to boom. Research has shown that the hotel industry in China is expected to increase in the future with its contribution to the economic development in China is high.
According to Roches (2018), transformational travel is a new trend whereby most travelers are in dire need of inward transformations. In such cases, these people need to go back to their places with a transformed and changed self after their global traveling experiences which helps them connect with nature, humanity, and way of reflection. As a result of this, most hotels have enhanced their hotels in ways that they have conserved unique events for the guests to participate in and acquire their change desires. Examples of such experiences include retreats and volunteer work. This kind of trend is likely to attract most customers to such hotels, and therefore more hotels will adopt this kind of services. Soon, most of the hotels will have incorporated personalized experiences for the customers.
Some hotels are offering experiences to the guests that are cuisine based. This is where food is incorporated into the skills for the guests, and this is inclusive of cooking classes offered to the guests in the restaurant of the hotels. Noting the preferences and tastes of the food that the guest orders and serving it are another experience and also using ingredients that are fresh for making buffets attract the guests. The development of the trend is as a result of most guests going to hotels specifically because of the guest experiences they offer that are food-oriented. This trend is expected to spread globally as food is an essential factor in most people's hearts.
Technological advancement trends is another essential factor in the hotel industry. According to Petrovits(6) achievements in the hotel industry such as the use of smart cards as keys for the rooms in the hotel have made it possible for customers to enjoy privacy and also save time during check-ins in the lobbies of the hotels. Most of the hotels nowadays are connected electronically in that they have applications that enable people to access their services easily for example for room reservations and services and also reserving tickets. These technological advancements are expected to significantly evolve in more services provided in the hotels and enhance the provision of better services.
Conclusion
In conclusion, a hotel manager is assigned the responsibility of ensuring the smooth running of all activities in the hotel. The salaries of the hotel managers vary according to the duties; a master's degree does not determine the ability of a person in becoming the manager. The current trends in technology, personalized services provided in hotels, economic developments of the country, economy sharing and transformation travel have affected the hotel industry and are expected to improve its growth soon.
