My passion for hospitality did not reveal itself when I started applying for a course in Ecole hoteliere de Lausanne (ECL); it has been slumbering for several years. Notably, I was born in Switzerland and grew up in the country until I was 14 years when I moved to Malaysia as an expatriate. Although at the beginning it was hard to live in a foreign country, the experience provided me with an international exposure which would later define my careers. The life abroad was instrumental in helping my career choice based on the different hotels that I visited and the differences that emerged from them. My life abroad and my interaction with people of different cultures and diversities was vital in informing my career choice in hospitality which is about serving and interacting with people.
During my time in Switzerland, I was that kid who was fortunate enough to travel around the world which entailed the visitation of both exotic and strange places. Although most of my friends and peers preferred to spend their holidays in nearby countries, I was focused on traveling as far as possible and getting to interact with people from different cultures. Looking back today, the ignition for my passion for hospitality was caused by the service that I received from the different destinations that I visited. Notably, some of the hotels that I stayed during my international travels include Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Boca Raton, the Reid's Palace in Madeira or the Eastern Oriental in Penang. During my stay in those hotels, the services that were offered to me were not only world class but also impressive.
One of the defining moments in my career came during my visit to Laos where I met Mr. Damian Killer, the General Manager of the Belle Rive Boutique Hotel. In specific, Damian Killer shared his experience about his education and how his career in the hospitality industry had been a huge success. He described to me how he started the hotel and ways that he used his collaborative and team skills to rally his staff towards the provision of quality service to the customers. From the conversation that I had with Damian Killer, I felt inspired and form that moment, I always knew that my career would be in hospitality.
I possess a huge wealth of skills, competencies, and experiences which I feel will be valuable during my course in ECL. My educational background in the realm of Design and Technology will enable me to identify any problem in hospitality and propose a pragmatic solution to the problem. I possess effective skills in communication; both verbal and in written form. My ability to fluently speak in English, Germany, and Mandarin makes me suited to work and interact with people of diverse cultures and backgrounds. My work experience in the Food Committee, as well as the Cas project, has provided me with valuable skills which will aid in my success in ECL. My cultural competence in different areas will undoubtedly provide a huge boost and facilitation towards my success. When admitted to ECL for a Bachelor of Science in International Hospitality Management, I will use the various skills, competencies, and experience to become one of the best in the world.
