Introduciton
Currently, the health care system thrives through evidence-based innovations. Innovation diffusion is a significant challenge in all organizations including the health care (Fickenscher & Bakerman, 2011). The characteristics of changes, perceptions managerial factors influence its adoption. Application of Rogers 2003 ensures a better understanding of the importance of the technological change and ensures success in the implementation of the technological change. This paper outlines how a nurse can facilitate the adoption of the EHR system in the health facility by using five qualities that determine individual attitudes towards adopting new technology by (Rodgers, 2003)
Relative Advantage
According to (Rodgers, 2003) the first meeting with the nurse's a facilitator should stress on the importance of change. Emphasizing on the importance of the EHR system and value of learning the new technology is psychological methods that helps those who resist change have an interest in the technology (Hyrkas & Harvey, 2010). I would begin the meeting with a presentation that shows how the EHR improves patient care. By use of audiovisual media, the nurses will focus on their commitment to excellence.
Compatibility
The next topic to cover during the meeting would be the role of the nurse as an agent of change in adopting the EHR system. Developing realistic goals that result in a patient satisfaction helps to understand the importance of integrating the EHR system into their nurse practice( Hyrkas, & Harvey, 2010. A patience level of care is affected by cohesiveness and an enabling environment.
Introducing case studies that details how other health organizations have benefited through the use of the EHR system will enable the nurses to appreciate the change and provide better patient care. By sharing the case studies, those nurses who are resistant to change can understand how the use of EHR can help them achieve their objectives. Case studies ensure that the nurses feel comfortable. The team that is responsible for maintaining the quality of patient care should get involved so that the nurse fraternity can apply on a daily basis (Rogers, 2003). Open question involvement and after every topic enhances understanding.
Simplicity
According to (Rogers, 2003) simplicity should be undertaken in such a way that the nurses can easily understand. Evaluation of the group's knowledge together with computer operating systems provides the nurse with the information required to divide the meeting into groups of those with experience and those without experience (Rogers, 2003). The nurses should be provided with accessibility to a computer to test the new EHR program. Combining novice nurses with experts enables them to learn and help them focus on the group. Managers should encourage the technicians that resist change through demonstrating that the EHR system is less stressful than the system currently in use. The nurse's code of ethics and standard of practice should be aligned during the meeting to ensure that adoption of technology is practiced according to nurse code of practice. By ensuring that nurses understand their law of ethics adaptation of the new technology is made easier. When compatibility is embraced, a nurse can swiftly move to another stage of advancement by relating the two systems.
Triability
Triability ensures that the nurses in the meeting have an opportunity to work with the EHR system (Hyrkas & Harvey, 2010). As a facilitator, I would provide 30 minutes for individual nurse's to assess their understanding of computer skills. I would present a simple assignment that ensures that evaluates the nurse's adoption to the EHR system. The facilitator can also walk around the room to provide assistance and put more emphasis on the abilities of the new system. Stress the capabilities of the EHR in helping store patient information. (Rogers, 2003).In some cases, fear of the unknown can lead to resistance to change (Rogers, 2003).
Observable Results
Observable results from other organization can be provided. The nurses can then be given small assignments that enable them to utilize the EHR system to achieve the same results as other systems but in a fast and organized manner. Evidence of effects enhances the efficiency of diffusion over time. (Rogers, 2003).The stages of adaptation should also be considered. Observable results enable that technicians know the importance of adopting the EHR system.
Nurses as Change Agents
To analyze the role of the nurse as a change agent, there should be a catalyst, for example, positive energy that is brought by advantages of the EHR system. The positive energy enables a nurse lead by example. Through this, a positive unit culture is created. As change agents, the nurse roles can be seen through their interactions with other medical fraternity. Nurses are responsible for facilitating a positive work environment.
Conclusion
Ensuring that the nurses acknowledge the reasons for change through presentations, case studies help reduce resistance. By offering hands-on experience help, the nurses develop skills that facilitate the familiarity with the new technology. Technology is expected to evolve thus requires the nurses lead as change agents and promote adoption of the new ideas.
