The Heather Musical Performance was held on November 10th 2016 at the performing arts center at Oakton Community College. The event had many performers including; Natalie Rae (Veronica Sawyer), Amanda Vinson (Heather Chandler), Mia Hart as Heather Duke, under the direction of Jason A. Fleece. The event was meant for entertainment as well as a learning experience on how live performances should be conducted, and how music can be used to communicate important messages effectively. During the event, I expected to hear stories about high school experiences, the methods which performers use to capture the attention of the audience and how to pass the message in a simple and concise way. I also anticipated seeing the reaction of the audience who might have experienced bullying in school to determine whether they could connect it with the music during the performance. Additionally, I expected some of the audience who were familiar with the lyrics would sing along as the performance was ongoing. Another expectation was to observe nonverbal cues such as the body movements and understand the significance of using these cues in communication. Since this performance could be useful in improving my speech during the class presentation. I would be in a better position to utilize some of the techniques observed to capture my classmates' attention and tailor message around in a simpler and precise manner.
Amanda Vinson assuming the role of Heather Chandler was one of the best performers during the event. She had a unique talent of engaging the audience. As a result, we found ourselves frequently cheering her throughout the performance. With a beautiful distinct costume that most of us liked, Amanda had a smooth voice significant in pointing out different tones depending on the mood. Therefore, the transition from the high to the low points in music was remarkably good. Her dancing moves were so captivating that the audience wished they could master. Amanda's voice blended well with the instruments enabling her to move the crowd during the performance. The Amanda's performance seemed to have been well prepared because she had mastered the role of the character. Throughout the performance, she was able to energetically project her voice which made every word clear to be understood. The dialogues which character was engaged in was truthful and motivational as it could be seen through her facial expressions as well as detected in her tonal variations. Amanda also appeared to have a passion for the music since she was able to get the best applause from the audience. For this reason, I had to clap for her showing adoration at the end of the show.
Natalie acting as Veronica Sawyer is another performer that was on track during the performance. She had confidence on the stage as she sang and danced maintaining her role as a character. Natalie brought out the transformation that takes place from a lovely young lady into a bad girl character of the Heather's. She is also managed to capture the attention of the audience through her funny body movements throughout the performance. She had the ability to imitate the character of Veronica Sawyer, thus, being capable of committing forgery was a remarkable quality of her performance. Natalie was engaged in motivating and truthful dialogues since she could touch our feelings by showing how difficult it is to gain acceptance to a social group in the school, which sometimes became necessary to use unorthodox means. The Natalie performance was also well prepared due to an excellent mastery of her lines.
The event was successful in overall because most of the audience was entertained. It was also a perfect learning opportunity for me. The Heathers music moved me as I attempted to relate the experiences of the characters to what happens in school. As a victim of bullying, representing the students who come from minority class, I had to struggle in gaining access to certain social circles like Veronica Sawyer. The performance also triggered my reflection on the challenges that teenagers have gone through like risky relationships. The performance was insightful about the different groups of people that one is likely to encounter in college and their behaviors. All types of societies at school were represented in the performance maintaining a balance between the minority and majority groups in school. The creativity of the show was evident starting from the beautiful costumes to the diversity of the characters involved as well as the movement of the characters on the stage being well coordinated. However, despite their large numbers, there was no Collision incidents witnessed.
The director did an excellent job in organizing the plot in a manner that was clear and straightforward in that it was easy to tell that the story revolved around school life and the experiences of most teenagers. There was no point where I got confused when following the plot as all of the characters involved suitable to tell the story. Some of the characters like Veronica Sawyer did incredible things to attain their motives in relationships. For example, she was involved in forging a letter that was supposed to act as a proof key to join the group of Heather's which rose above all other students in school. The director had also worked hard ensuring that there was no dull moment experienced during the show and the audience remained focused on watching the exciting performance.
There was an outstanding cooperation between the actors in that it was very rare to find the stage occupied by less than four actors throughout the performance. The actors were able to make movements in unison displaying an interesting show to the audience. The songs involved had a lot of jokes inside and delivered the much-anticipated laughter and entertainment to the audience. From the performance, it was clear that the director wanted to focus on the theme of the puberty life and the problems that face almost everyone at that stage. Veronica Sawyer is the character that is used to show how difficult it can be to form relationships as a teenager. For instance, Veronica abandoned her morals so as to join the group that was perceived to rule other students in school, just like many teenagers lose their moral at puberty stage and end up ruining their lives. After watching the performance, I felt deeply sorry for all the teens who are at risk of falling into the trap of living a careless life to gain recognition. I felt that a lot of teenagers need guidance especially on sexual education as depicted during the show.
My favorite part was when Veronica impressed the other Heathers with her forging skills to the extent that she could no longer be ignored. My worst moment was during the fist fight between J.D, Kurt, and Ram because I hate violence. One of the new skills learned during the performance was the effective use of non-verbal cues in communication. From all the character's movements, it was possible to get their message, and I will be seeking to utilize the same skills in my speech during my classes. The other skill I learned was voice projection, and I will be attempting to deliver my speech clearly for everyone to hear just like the characters did in Heather's music. The event was a great learning opportunity, especially in communication skills.
