Good Shepherd Hospice in Houston, Texas provides medical care services as well as support for the elderly people in the society. The organization has professionals with various specializations to handle the medical needs of the various people. While some of the patents are admitted in the hospital, others are served from their homes, especially the elderly, to ensure that they live a better live. There are some personal risks that one may have to deal with to achieve personal safety.
One of the policies that may anger the customers is being assigned a volunteer whom they do not like. Since individuals are not allowed to choose the elderly people, they are to serve, some of the elderly people may react with great emotions if their interests are not respected (International Maritime Organization, 2000).
There are various risks that one may be exposed to when working at a Good Shepherd Hospice in Houston, Texas. One needs to be aware of the various risks so that they can take care. Individuals usually work in the organization or may be sent to the field to take care of the elderly. In these different environments, there are different risks. First, there is the risk that the elderly people one serve may be uncooperative and may attack the workers and volunteers. The best approach to dealing with the problem is ensuring that the volunteers do not perform their tasks alone (Anderson, 2010).
There are also risks that are associated with injuries when using various equipment. Injuries can have other adverse effects such as infections from other diseases through the open areas that result from injuries. There would be a need to treat those who are injured when using various equipment. It would also be prudent to provide the volunteers and employees with protective gear that ensure that the chances of injuries are reduced when working at the organization. The volunteers and employees should be able to use the various equipment accurately to avoid injuries (Anderson, 2010).
The volunteers and employees also deal with drugs and chemicals that may not be good for them. There is a need to ensure that one handles the various chemicals using protective materials so as to avoid reactions with the skin. Additionally, individuals may be allergic to some of the chemicals that may be used in Good Shepherd Hospice in Houston, Texas and this is why there is a need to ensure that they wear protective materials when handling the customers that they serve.
There are several things that can be recommended to increase personal safety at Good Shepherd Hospice in Houston, Texas. First, there should be appropriate protective gear for the workers to ensure that they do not contaminate themselves with the various dangerous products. Secondly, the individuals need to work as a team to ensure that when there is a problem, they can also handle it within the shortest time possible. There is also the need for the employees and volunteers to be conversant with the area that they work so that when they are attacked or are in trouble, they know where they can easily get help.
In conclusion, personal safety in an organization involves the efforts of an individual as well as the support that they get from the organization that they work for. Employees have to tell the risks that they face so that they can receive the needed help.
