History of Health Behavior
The amount of sleep is a significant indicator of well-being and health in people. Adequate sleep is an important factor in health-related behaviors. Human beings do spend at least a third of their day sleeping since this is considered to be essential to their health. Other scholars define sleep as a state that makes people unconscious from which an individual can be aroused. Apart from just being a periodic rest condition for nervous and body system, it is also a phase that encourages the nervous and body system to recuperate. The average time that human can take while sleeping is 7-10 hours a night.
If an individual lacks enough sleep or sleep disturbances, the person is likely to sleep during the day. Because of this, the mental acuity will decrease, and the normal growth together with the ability to master some ideas and concepts will be decreased. In as much as progress has been realized in these areas, there are greater gaps in the current knowledge about specific health policies for adequate sleep. Moreover, there is a relationship between daytime sleepiness and healthy sleep habits. Though some people have not been in a position of getting enough sleep, physicians have been assessing why they experience inadequate sleep and proposing measures that can be taken to ensure they have an adequate sleep. Also, the seriousness of the effects of inadequate sleep are highly recognized, and this is the reason why physicians have different programs, which they taught about the importance of adequate sleep regarding having a healthy lifestyle.
National Impact of Adequate Sleep
How you live is affected by how you sleep. Moreover, insufficient sleep does not only affect an individual, but also a nation. Insufficient sleep has become a public health problem. Across the western economy, lack of sleep has been increasing problems. People have been sleeping less because of lifestyle factors, for instance, stress, lack of exercise, alcohol consumption and smoking. The on-demand society together with economy prefer using electronic media, hence making people spend more time on the media, hence making them have inadequate sleep.
A country with people who have been sleeping less than six hours is likely to have higher productivity, unlike a country where workers sleep for seven to nine hours. This is a sign that adequate sleep can greatly affect the economy of a nation. Based on the extrapolation of a country, the United States is known for losing almost 1.23 million days, working days, because of insufficient sleep. Also, there is a possibility that inadequate sleep can increase the mortality risks. The rate of mortality risk in a country that has people who are used to sleeping less than six hours a night is higher, unlike those who have adequate sleep, seven to nine hours a night. For those who are used to sleeping for six to seven hours, their mortality risk is seven percent higher for all death's causes.
Lack of sleep can also affect the labor supply of a given country in different ways, especially on women. Because of increased mortality, there will be a decrease in the working population. An individual with sleeping issues is likely to perform less work or be absent from work. Also, the skill acquisition of children will automatically slow. In other words, having an adequate sleep will increase, the working population, hence increasing the productivity of a nation. Also, the children's skill acquisition will keep on improving.
Worldwide Impact
In this fast growing world, getting adequate sleep is not a priority to many people. Inadequate sleep is skyrocketing globally (Neel, 2012). The sleep problem in many nations far more than what people can imagine. The sleep problem is among the factors that contribute towards the poor economy in the whole world. There are several diseases that have been developed as a result of lack of sleep. Because of this, different studies have been developed on comprehensive strategies that can be used to combat the issue of inadequate sleep. The strategies aim at improving sleeping habits as well as coming up with traditional approaches that can be used to deal with sleep deprivation related diseases. The world has gone to the extent of creating awareness, which outlines the consequences of lack of sleep. This is an indication that the whole world is affected by sleep deprivation. Also, since the economy of the world is controlled by the economy of each country, if people consider having adequate sleep, the working population will automatically increase, hence increasing the economy of the world. Also, the overall population of the world will increase, since the rate of mortality will decrease because there will be a low instance of people dying because of sleep deprivation related diseases.
