Introduction
Food insecurity affects wide range of low-income earners. The resultant effects of food shortage and low nutrient food is attributed to poor performance in academic activities. As pointed out by Jyoti et al. (2005), depressive characters are evident in adolescents along with suicidal attributes. Food security is critical in the development of children and growth in their cognitive abilities. Poor brain development may lead to poor academic performance as well as depressive behavior in adolescents which hinders their productivity.
The food security concern is a crucial matter that requires the attention of different stakeholders to address the food requirements in different populations across the US. Nutritional needs and the associated effects of the deficiencies need to be addressed to establish a healthy society free from the adverse effects caused by insufficient food. Various food programs are set up in Chicago to facilitate accessibility and affordability of food to all people at different corners of the country (CCT., 2019). The Farm to Community Food Box Program is comprehensively evaluated in this case to establish its impact on addressing the issue of food security in the Chicago area.
The Top Box Food Program leverages the food delivery networks which enables collection of food products from small scale farms in more than 100 farms and distributes to the proximity of underserved neighborhoods. The public schools, churches, housing facilities, and community organizations in Chicago are used as delivery sites (Onegooddeedchicago., 2019). In this case, the Chicago public in underserved areas is adequately served with food which they can order online and have delivered at a nearby school (Propeller., 2019). The program seeks to expand its operations to at least ten school sites to reach out to the neighborhoods that struggle to access healthy as well as affordable food (Room, 2019). The program has incorporated meat boxes along with other protein boxes which increases the demand for building a pool of farmers to provide for the local sustainable meat and protein products in the Chicago region. Top Box Foods carry out market research for affordable and fresh food products such as fruits, poultry, frozen meats, vegetables, and fish (Topboxfoods). They bundle the products and partner with churches, public school, community organizations and housing facilities to allow for the supply of the products to communities that experience limited access to affordable and healthy food.
