Introduction
United Parcel Service (UPS) is a multinational enterprise that deals with supply chain management and package delivery. It utilizes modern technology to improve how the supply chain is managed. The organization is also developing its business to include a symbiotic relationship with other companies. The objective is to make these firms to incorporate the UPS technologies into their operations. The company has been making developments in its wireless, freight, billing and global technologies to ensure the provision of quality shipping and supply chain services. Also, the firm's operations are established on web-based technologies which enhance its efficiency. To understand the United Parcel Service, this paper examines the fundamental implications of UPS transportation, their pros and cons and the way the company is organized.
It is important to examine the major impacts of UPS transportation. The transportation industry has been experiencing some challenges since the sector is time-sensitive. Challenges have been brought by the need to reduce inventory, and enhance customer response. UPS transportation has impacted the industry in its capacity as both a third-party logistics company and fourth-party logistics (Ling and Lee 25). The company has been able to effectively offer supply chains management solutions such as warehousing, logistics, and distribution. The services provided by the UPS Company have revolutionized traditional business services. For instance, its third-party logistics provide services to the client supply chain. It facilitates teaming up and interaction of multiple parties. The company has made significant changes through the implementation of information technology. It has an extensive e-commerce environment which includes infrastructure, data, and proprietary e-commerce technology (Ling and Lee 26). The integration of these components enables the company to enhance its operations which results in unprecedented delivery services of documents and services.
UPS Company in its operations has some advantages and disadvantages. Advantages include some of the aspects that support the company is the provision of its services. UPS Company has a strong brand name in the United States and the rest of the world where it has operations (Bhasin). A brand name is critical in the aspect of marketing; it attracts customers since the company has a positive image. Another advantage is that the company has a very advanced supply chain which is essential in the provision services. They have managed to extensively step on technology such as order tracking a delivery, customer relationship management, and supply chain management. The company has smart logistics that help in smart scanning, order management logistics and real-time delivery tracking among others. It also has some advantages such as having poor revenue management especially since many customers are opting to spend on online shopping (Bhasin). This means the revenue has reduced and they have to improve their spending to improve infrastructure for better service delivery.
The UPS Company has an organizational structure that entails four levels. The first level is the corporate level which deals with worldwide strategies. There are regional levels which are classified by network geography (Lohapiriyakul 2-4). Lastly, there is a district and country level. The company is organized this way to ensure that the delivery of services to consumers worldwide. This organizational structure has enabled the company to be a third-party logistics provider and also a fourth-party logistics provider. The third-party logistics services entail provisions of outsourcing services to firms, and they include transportation and warehousing services (Lohapiriyakul 2-10). The fourth-party logistics ensure the company provides logistic/supply chain management and distribution services. These have enabled the company to offer quality and timely services to its customers.
